Taking down Brock on M20

THE process to remove the con- troversial contraflow system on the M20 known as Operation Brock has started. With the departure of the UK

from the EU on January 31 it is felt that it will not be needed dur- ing the transition period, which lasts until the end of 2020. The work to take out the barri-

ers which make up Brock will take until the end of January, with diversions in place between J9 and 8. Lib Dem transport spokesman

Rob Bird (pictured), a Kent county councillor, asked how much the taxpayer had to stump up for the "misery" it has caused. The London-bound side will be restored to its normal three lanes. The announcement from the transport minister comes after a delegation of MPs, including Chatham & Aylesford’s Tracey Crouch, met with transport min- ister Chris Heaton-Harris, who said he appreciated the barrier has caused “disruption to road users”. Cllr Bird said: “What we need

to know is how much this little lot has cost the taxpayer and what this has achieved, apart from causing misery and disruption to the daily lives of tens of thou- sands of people." The M20 bears the brunt of French strikes and adverse cross- Channel weather with the imple- mentation of Operation Stack.

Operation Brock was meant to

keep traffic moving, but its nar- row lanes and low resilience meant that frequent crashes caused massive problems for the M20 and surrounding roads. The issue of lorry parks being

sited in Kent will also re-emerge, with Highways England actively seeking plots for the purpose. Cllr Bird warned that the real problems would emerge at the end of the year when customs checks come into play. He said: “There's a fair chance

that the barriers will be back up by next December. If negotiations go foul between now and then, perhaps it might be up even sooner."

Plan to tackle domestic abuse

CRIME reports show a year-on-year rise in cases of domestic abuse in the borough. A total of 2,895 cases were reported to the police by victims of

abuse in Tonbridge and Malling in the 12 months to September 2019. The figures show a rise of 494 on the previous year and leap from 1,914 the year before that. Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s overview and scrutiny committee has come up with a plan to tackle the chal- lenges.

Councillors heard assistance is provided by a number of support groups in the area. It also has a duty to provide advisory services to victims of domestic abuse, and a duty to prevent homelessness, with domestic abuse a primary cause. The council funds the Sanctuary Scheme which provides hous-

ing associations with funds to fit secure phone lines, reinforced doors and ‘safe’ rooms for those at risk. Members heard help was provided by organisations such as DAVSS (Domestic Abuse Volunteer Services).
