The night-time industry is constantly evolving to meet the demands of consumers – and 2020 will be no different. Here are our predictions for the year ahead…


Wellbeing Will Rise


The hospitality industry is struggling to fill vacancies due to a low number of applicants. It is a vibrant and interesting industry that provides plenty of positives including flexibility and creativity, but now’s the time to show potential employees the real benefits of working in hospitality.


Like every job, there are downsides. Studies have shown that those working in the night-time leisure industry felt long working hours, late nights and irregular shift patterns had an adverse impact on their mental health. Very few managers in the industry have mental health awareness training, and this gap in knowledge will eventually filter down and begin to impact staff at all levels. Ensuring managers know how to support their team will be key to improving mental health across the industry.


Consumers Will Look For Their Next Big Photo Opportunity


From installing neon light displays right through to branded photo booths, venues are seeking out ways to encourage consumers to post photographs of their venue. This increases the number of people tagging the venue on social media and talking about it with their friends, which can be great for business as it encourages new customers to come along.


Food and drink can’t just taste delicious – it must look photography worthy too. We predict venues will constantly seek new and interesting ways to present their products, to entice consumers into taking the perfect pic.

Security Will Be Taken Seriously


There will be a much stronger focus on improving the training and increasing the quantity of door staff to help keep guests safe. The industry is facing a shortage of qualified door staff, with many trained security guards choosing to work regular hours outside of the hospitality industry. There will be movements towards trying to improve this in the coming years.


Customers Continue To Value Experience


Customers don’t want to relive the same experience. Those visiting late-night leisure venues are no longer satisfied with dancing along to the same music each week. We can all discover new music via apps like Spotify, and home entertainment systems are such good quality that house parties are rising in popularity.


The night-time industry must provide something new and interesting for customers, thinking of creative and fresh ideas. Themed nights or one-off events are likely to increase in popularity.


Sustainability


Sustainability initiatives such as installing smart light bulbs and smart heating, will continue to be popular amongst many venues. As well as simply reducing single-use plastic, bars and nightclubs should consider switching to renewable energy sources where possible, removing bottled water and offering filtered water as an alternative, ‘upcycling’ products such as lemons to reduce waste, and sourcing local ingredients.
