SLOWLY BUT SURELY, THE PHILIPPINE COCKATOO GAINS GROUND

he well-known fable of the hare and the tortoise, which pits one against the other in a race, concludes with the tortoise as the winner, the lesson of the story being that success can be


achieved slowly and steadily. In real life, the character of the tortoise could easily be assumed by the Philippine Cockatoo (Cacatua haematuropygia) - not the bird, but the wild population of the species. Slowly but surely this wild population is increasing in response to the comprehensive conservation efforts being undertaken to prevent its extinction, and to bring about the recovery of the species and its lowland forest habitat.
