Including The Latest Advances ...

in close tolerance casting technology, the drawing tolerances for this electrical connector appeared to be unattainable on a production basis. Many dimensions were on the order of plus or minus .003. Some areas had walls as thin as .018. Fortunately, the buyer and designer recognized that close cooperation with a selected foundry would be necessary. As a result a conference was arranged which established:

1. A sample stainless steel casting should be submitted.

2. Tolerances would apply on the sample cast dimension and the drawing dimension would be changed, if necessary, to suit the casting.

3. The sample casting would be given a full layout to determine nominal dimensions. Production castings would be given 100% checking by the foundry with functional gages supplied by the buyer. The buyer would have a second identical set for incoming inspection. Acceptance or rejection would be based on results of the functional gages.

These guide lines, established with the whole-hearted cooperation of the buyer and engineering department, made this "impossible" casting a reality.
