Redesigned Part Permits More Complicated Design and Improved Strength at Lighter Weight By Walt Dubovick

Engineered Precision Casting Company

The Gimbal Outer Frame investment casting shown here, with its neat functional appear- ance, typifies the advantages which the proc- ess has to offer. It was originally designed to be produced as a brazed assembly of ma- chined pieces and stampings. Warpage during the brazing operation made subsequent ma- chining operations extremely difficult with high scrap percentage. A redesign to an in- vestment casting resulted in a lighter though stronger part and permitted the addition of details which were impractical for a fabricated part. Concentricity of the holes through the end plates, which are 4" in diameter and 2%" apart, is held within .010 T. I. R. Paral- lelism between the interior surfaces of the same plates is also held to .010. Material is alloy steel SAE 8620.

Electronic Parts Demonstrate Intricate Contours and Exact Dimensions of v st ent Casting

By J. Rausch Rausch Manufacturing Co.

Precise routing of wire leads is insured with an investment cast base for a rotary electric switch, figure ( 1). Terminals are positioned accurately. The part is 1" m diameter and % " long. It is cast of 356 aluminum.

The electronic chassis in figure ( 2) is cast of silicon bronze. Walls and partitions are as thin as .030 in., yet the part withstands 12 G at 2000 cycles vibration. The terminal grounding studs are only 1/16 x ~in. Overall size of the chassis is 1 ~ x 4 x 6 inches.
