WILDFLOWERS
Contrary to ornamental flowers, wildflowers thrive best in low-nutrient situations, and the very best way of preventing competitive species such as docks and thistles becoming established is to give some thought to preparing the seedbed. In particularly nutrient-rich situations it might be worth inverting the topsoil to expose the nutrient-poor subsoil - the depth can vary, talk to one of our team if you’re unsure how to do this.

Pure Yellow Rattle
Yellow Rattle, Rhinanthus minor, is an attractive hemi-parasite - it attaches itself to the roots of grasses and reduces their vigour. This allows other attractive plants to compete in a sward where you’re aiming for colour and form rather than just tall grasses. It commonly occurs in old hay meadows which are cut in mid-July,
100% Cornflield Annuals
The Cornfield annuals seed mixture is composed of a mixture of species that commonly occurred as extravagantly floriferous weeds within spring wheat and barley fields before pesticides created effective controls. As annuals they won’t occur again unless the soil is disturbed.
Tip for preparing an area for wildflower seeds
Allowing plants to germinate and then treating them with glyphosate will exhaust the seedbank and facilitate the growth of the seeds that you’re sowing. You may need to disturb the surface several times to reduce the competition - remember this is your best chance of controlling weeds before you sow the seed mixture - good preparation will result in an attractive display. Wildflowers can be sown in the autumn or the spring.
