WHAT’S ON CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

If you’re looking for a more traditional family Christmas, head to Ham House and Garden this winter.

During the month of December the house will be bathed in candlelight, as it was always designed to be. The candles may now be flameless, but this 17th Century treasure trove still sparkles in the darkness, revealing glittering secrets within.

Let the magic sink in Enhancing each room are elegant natural Christmas decorations in green, soft gold and orange. The glow of candlelight and scent of spices and dried oranges fill the air and an exquisite sugar banquet has been laid out for

the Duke and Duchess; a feast for the senses. It’s an opportunity to take a moment together, relax and let the magic of Christmas sink in.

The use of oranges in the Christmas decorations this year highlights the work currently being done to conserve the Orangery at Ham House, one of the oldest in the UK. Originally designed to protect exotic plants such as orange and

lime trees throughout the winter months, it now houses the estate’s café. Urgent conservation work to the roof and elaborate cornicing will continue throughout the winter but it remains open for hot drinks, cakes, festive kids’ lunches and more, the purchase of which all help preserve this special building for generations to come.

A family day out With school holidays until early January, there’s also an opportunity to take a more traditional family day out after Christmas. Ham House and Garden offers a family trail and many outdoor walks – a great opportunity to get everyone out in the crisp winter air and spending time together.
