quarter of a century since taking over at The Old Mill in Saxtead on 21st October 1994. 25 years is a long time and since taking over at the pub Nick and Ruth have celebrated a coupe of major landmarks. They got married in 1996 and their son, James, was born in 1998 so it is fair to say the Old Mill is very much part of the fabric of their lives. Our village pubs are something we must cherish. They are important meeting places

for the community, somewhere for friends and family to get together and unwind whilst enjoying good old-fashioned hospitality. That is what you will find here. You don’t make it to 25 years in this industry unless you very good at what you do and work very hard – Nick and Ruth are clearly both very good and very hard working. The recipe for the longevity is straight-forward. Offer good traditional home-cooked food in a friendly, comfortable and welcoming environment. This has made the Old Mill a destination pub with customers regularly


travelling from


as far afield as Colchester, Stowmarket and Aldeburgh – not to mention those who visit from much closer to home. Nick and Ruth prefer to concentrate on offering great


food and drink rather than fill the calendar with events. That said, The Old Mill compete in the South Suffolk Cribbage League and were crowned winners last year! Having claimed their

prize money, they raised a further £250 at the pub and donated the full £500 to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Nick is Chair of the league and invites anyone who is interested to come along and get involved.

established close ties with the community. The business sponsors a youth team at Framlingham Town FC where Nick is also a coach and level seven referee. The pub also sponsors Leiston and District Swimming Club where James is a squad swimmer and has


competed up to Suffolk level. The ties go further as Nick is also Treasurer of the club. In addition to this they run the 100 club to raise funds for Saxtead Church, host meetings for the High Suffolk Rotary Club
