WINTER BREAKS 2019/20 THE GUIDE

around, the resort is served by no fewer than 58 lifts to give joints a chance to thaw. Courchevel has also earned a reputation as a luxury retreat for shoppers, gourmands and folk looking for pulsing après-ski bars and eateries. www.courchevel.com

La Rosière

The ski area of La Rosière Espace San Bernardo grew last winter with the opening of a new sector: Mont-Valaisan. Located on the French side, this €15m development created fi ve new red pistes supplied by two detachable six-person chairlifts, at Moulins and Mont-Valaisan. Also new is the four-star hotel Alparena & Spa, which was fi nished over the summer, while two new chalets – Chalet l’Écrin and Chalet de l’Ours – are opening on December 14. And, also new for this winter is the chance to sleep in an igloo. The fun starts at 7pm with an accompanied walk to the igloo village. After a welcome drink, guests share a Savoyard fondue before sleeping in a snow bed covered with animal skins. www.larosiere.net

Les Arcs

Les Arcs belongs to the Paradiski area in the Tarentaise Valley. It’s made up of four modern villages: Arcs 1600 and 1800, which sit on the treeline overlooking the commune of Bourg-Saint- Maurice; and 2000 and 1950, a hub for free-riding and a fi ve-star resort, respectively. Expect a variety of on- and off-piste slopes, superb woodland runs and a cable car to neighbouring La Plagne. Making the resort even more accessible, the funicular was introduced last year, taking passengers from Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Les Arcs in just seven minutes. en.lesarcs.com

Serre Chevalier

A true gem among French Alpine destinations, the expansive and bustling ski resort of Serre Chevalier Vallée Briançon is a giant playground for winter- breakers and snow sports enthusiasts. There is a sense of timelessness in the villages’ olde-worlde feel. Yet, with its modern accommodation and ski transport options, it seamlessly doubles up as a vast, modern ski domain of almost 4,000
