YORKSHIRE, Halifax, Samuel Hamer, a George III Penny [1806-7] and a Birmingham, Workhouse, Penny, 1813, obvs. countermarked BRADFORD WORKHOUSE (as W 411), and additionally S.H. HAMER HALIFAX 1906 in 3 lines, 17.78g/6h, 27.99g/6h (cf. DNW 134, 353) [2]. Coins worn, counterstamps fine to very fine

Provenance: First sold with envelope inscribed ‘countermarked by me as per date impressed, S.H.H.’, bt S.E. Schwer 1981; second bt S.E. Schwer December 1980.


Hamer exhibited the two steel punches that had been used to countermark the 19th century Bradford Workhouse issues to the British Numismatic Society on 30 November 1906. He used these, and other punches, on subsequent occasions to make deliberate concoctions, both for vanity and personal gain

Restall, arms, WS cypher below, revs. Dock Offices, 18.76g/12h; Grammar School, 18.26g/12h; Holy Trinity Church, 20.38g/12h; Hymers College, 20.74g/12h; Royal Infirmary, 18.19g/12h; Town Hall, 20.56g/12h; William III statue, 18.45g/12h, edges plain, all 33mm (W 3065 -71; Bell, 1966, A11-17) [7]. One or two minor marks, otherwise a brilliant set, rare; in original fitted card case [lid loose]

William Sykes (1861-1941), from Cottingham, E. Yorkshire, estate and land agent, token collector from the mid-1890s; for his private tokens, which he designed himself, he was recommended to J.A. Restall by S.H. Hamer; 50 sets in bronzed-copper were struck. Sykes’ token collection remained in the hands of his descendants until being auctioned in 1986
