Shakespeare was writing at the time of the coronation of King James. To flatter the new monarch, Duncan was a good king, and Banquo, one of James’s ancestors, was portrayed as noble and moral. Shakespeare also took ideas from Daemonologie, a book James himself wrote about the supernatural.
