marriedDerek Jennings in 1957 and the couplemoved to Dundee, Scotland, whereDerekworked as a government- employed scientist,
becoming eminent in his field. Joanwasmother toHelen, Richard and
John.Helen said: “My parentsmoved to Othamaftermy father retired at 60. “Mymotherwas a gentle but very social
person,whomade and kept very good friends and had an elegant quality. “My fatherworkedwith a local
businessman called Simon Bricewhilstmy mother became involved in volunteering includingwork atMaidstoneHospital, a hospice shop inMaidstone and as a guide at theNational Trust property, Stoneacre. “My parentswere also involvedwith the
local church inOthamandmymotherwas part of a large social networkwhichmet regularly andwent out in the
area.My fatherwas often called to speak at conferences and he andmymother enjoyed the opportunities for travel and the places they visited.” Joan leaves her husband, children,
grandchildren: Callum, Callum, Claire, Henry, Lawrence, Teri-Louise,Adrienne and Struan and great-grandchildren: Rosie, Ewan,Ma�hewandAnna.Another great-granddaughter is expected in September.

THE death of LenAlliston (65) following an accident on theA2 made local headlines. Len, of Staplehurst and formerly of
Yalding,was anHGV driverwith years of experience.His death came after an accident near Ebbsfleet. Tributes have been led by Len’s partner of seven years Linda Reynolds,who
described himas a “much-loved and caringman.” Lenwas father to
daughter Charlie and stepfather to Linda’s children Sco�, Ian, Jenny, Jess and Ben.He also leaves grandchildren
Micky, Sonny and Lenny and one great grandchild, Stanley.

THE death of Sammy Draper (43) made local headlines. The father of six had been living in a
tent around town following spells in prison and out of work. Sammywas father
toAbbie, Billy, Tina, Tilly, Josephine and Sammy, and grandfather to Grace, Charlie andObie. The tributes paid in
thewake of his death included a discussion
about the difficulty of ge�ing a life back on track following the kind of problems he had experienced. Writing on Facebook, Jo Lee said:
“Never see our Samwithout a smile on his face and gave themost loving cuddles and always told us howmuch he loved us.” Sammy,whowas found dead near
Sainsbury’s at Romney Place,Maidstone, leaves his children and grandchildren.

SUSAN “Sue” Lesley Parker (69), of King Edward Road,was born and educated in Dover. Born SusanMummery, she trained as a
teacher in Salisbury and started her career at the newly-opened SenacreWood CP School in 1977, taking lodgings in Loose then St Luke’s Road,Maidstone. The bondwith staff resulted inmany

school netball, badminton and rounders, andwas popularwith students and parents. Shemet husbandDerek at this time and
theymarried in July 1982. Their son, James,was born in June 1989 and Sue stoppedworking in his formative years, before returning to education at Loose CP School until her retirement. Sue loved
badminton, country dancing, and the
outdoors. In later years she took up lawn bowls, playing regularly atWestborough BC and reaching county level in competition. She a�ended church at St Luke’s and
later St Philip’s. She suffered froman aggressive formof dementia, becoming more disabledwith time andwas cared for byDerek and James until her death. Derek said: “Suewas loved and popular
with everyone shemet andwill be sadly missed.”
Charlie Slocombe
TRIBUTES have been paid to a former TonbridgeAngels footballerwho collapsed during a six-a-side game and could not be revived. Charlie Slocombe (26)was involved
with the club for a number of years, having come up through their youth ranks. SteveMcKimm–
Charlie’smanager at the club – said: “He was a nice, humble lad. I never had a problemwith him during training or games,whether he was in or out of the team, and hewas a
credit to his family.” Charlie’s father, Keith,was a physio at
the club during Charlie’s time in the ranks.Once released by Tonbridge, Charliewent on to play for other clubs includingHastings, Crowborough and Hythe. TonbridgeAngels’website stated:
“Charliewas a popular player at the club whowas involved in both the reserve and 1st teamsides.He always showed a willingness to step up and help his team mates when required.”

THE death has been announced ofDiana MWoodrow, a “much loved sister, aunt, teacher”. Dianaworkedwas headmistress of
PalaceWoodAllington School from1973 to 1987.
