3 Recycled playgrounds 4 Mud kitchens
As more schools try to cut down on single-use plastic and become more environmentally friendly, using recycled plastic play equipment could be the way forward. Companies such as Playquest have been making playground equipment out of recycled plastic (collected by domestic recycling schemes) for years. The strong, splinter-free material will last for decades and is virtually maintenance- free. You can buy fun trails, playhouses, interactive panels, platforms, activity centres, swings and outdoor furniture. The equipment can be re-recycled at the end of its use as playground equipment, so it ‘completes the circle’.

Getting creative in a mud kitchen helps improve fine motor skills, increases understanding of materials, encourages imaginative play and, of course, makes a lovely mess! Children gain confidence and improve social skills as they play, communicate and make recipes with their friends. A mud kitchen can be updated or improved at any time – how about adding a chalkboard to encourage writing, measuring jugs and scales to encourage number play, or introducing herbs and flowers to add new textures and scents? Perfect for your EYFS and KS1 playground or forest school, a good, tough mud kitchen can provide learning fun for years to come.

5 Sensory rooms
A sensory room is a space designed to help children develop and engage their senses using a range of special equipment. It can be used to provide therapy for children with limited communication skills and sensory disorders, in particular, making the school environment more inclusive. Resources can include interactive bubble tubes, rainbow lights, fibre optics, LED sensory projectors, cushions and bean bags, as well as aromas, sounds and tactile materials to engage their senses in a safe environment. Many companies will design a space from start to finish, or you can design your own room and then buy the sensory products to fill the space.
