For a 4.6 billion year old star, the sun continues to generate a lot of news and never more so than during the summer months when headlines will, almost inevitably, shout out about the dangers of exposure to the sun.


So here’s my top guide to the sun and how you can protect yourself whilst still having fun in the sun?


UVA, UVB AND UV RADIATION Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a type of energy produced by the sun and some artificial sources, such as solariums.


The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main cause of skin cancer. UV damage also causes sunburn, tanning, premature ageing and eye damage.


UV radiation isn’t like the sun’s light or heat, which we can see and feel. Your senses cannot detect UV radiation, so you won’t notice the damage until it has been done.


UV Radiation is considered the main cause of non-melanoma skin cancers with 147,000 new cases reported in the UK every


year – that’s approximately 400 new cases every day. Experts believe that, especially for fair-skinned people, UV radiation also frequently plays a key role in melanoma the most dangerous form of skin cancer which kills more than 2,500 annually in the UK alone.


UVA rays are less intense than UVB rays but they are 30 – 50 times more prevalent and are, therefore, a significant risk to us all. UVA also penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB and has long been known to play a major part in skin aging and wrinkling, but did you know that up to 80% of fine lines and wrinkles are the result of UV damage.
