Sheep producers seeing value in

genetic program Data helps producers choose high performing breeding stock

by BARBARA JOHNSTONE GRIMMER

ABBOTSFORD – Sheep

producers attending the Pacific Agriculture Show on January 26 received a crash course in using genetic records to improve their bottom line. Quebec purebred sheep

producer Johanne Cameron, armed with an M.Sc. in sheep genetics and years of GenOvis records, told producers that Quebec producers used to receive a subsidy on a per- ewe basis and had no incentive to improve their flocks. “Many farms had a mix of

breeds, variety of crosses, used crossbred rams, and didn’t pay attention to performance,” she explained. “After the subsidy was gone, sheep farms decreased 47% in 12 years and breeding flocks declined 30%.” But productivity on the

remaining farms improved. Lamb numbers didn’t decline, yet there were fewer albeit more productive ewes. Breeders were encouraged

to keep good records and submit them to GenOvis, a national genetic improvement program based in Quebec, which would calculate the best-performing ewes and rams. And, as producers better understood flock genetics, there was an increased demand for terminal rams evaluated with GenOvis. Even crossbred F1 ewes with good genetic records command a higher price than a similar-looking ewe with no genetic records – sometimes six times more.

Cameron visited Victoria for

the Canadian Sheep Breeders Association (CSBA) conference two years ago as a CSBA director and to present on GenOvis. At the time, no BC producers were participating in the program. There are now three. Cameron hopes her latest visit to BC, hosted by the BC Purebred Sheep Breeder’s Association, will prompt more producers to use GenOvis to improve their flocks and assist in culling weak producers.

Breed selection Canada has 52 breeds of

sheep, and a chosen breed should reflect farm reality and objectives, says Cameron. Breeds are further divided into maternal breeds, which have a natural aptitude to be good mothers, with good milk, as well as non-prolific and prolific breeds. Prolific breeds are suited to intensively managed farming systems with good management. Non-prolific breeds have fewer lambs but may have other benefits, such as breeding out of season. Terminal breeds are primarily for growth, size and meat, and are used for ram selection.

AgSafe BC regional safety consultant for the North Okanagan, Chad Stewart, second from left, presented Curt, far left, June and John de Dood of Sunninghill Holsteins and Farmer John’s Market in Grindrod with their new safety Certificate of Recognition (COR) in February. COR certification shows that farm employers, like the de Doods, have exceeded health and safety requirements to create a safe workplace for their staff. keeping and a good crossbreeding program, superior, uniform market lambs can be produced, improving farm profitability, says Cameron, who went through several exercises on how to use the program effectively.

“After your flock has been evaluated by GenOvis, the next step is to evaluate for conformation,” says Cameron, who is also a well-respected sheep judge. Cameron outlined each
