producers got a jump-start on reporting animal movements with the Canadian Livestock Traceability System (CLTS) during a traceability workshop sponsored by the Canadian Sheep Federation at the Pacific Agriculture Show in January. CLTS is an online database owned by the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA). New traceability
regulations are expected to be announced in Canada Gazette as soon as April, and the workshop aimed to prepare producers for what they’ll require. CLTS’s system traces animal
movements in the event of an emergency (such as a disease outbreak) in order to contain the spread of disease and minimize market disruptions. This will require timely reporting to CLTS. CCIA is the national administrator responsible for ruminant traceability outside of Quebec. Jen Taplin, who supports the network’s customers, assured producers the system is user- friendly. Accounts are already established for
Traceability began for sheep producers 15 years ago with CSIP tags. All tags issued to producers are already in the database. This has allowed for trace-back to the original farm but not for tracing animal movements to other farms, auctions or abattoirs. For full traceability,
producers will need to have a provincial premises identification (PID) number for their farms.

for sheep producers is a movement manifest, a document that travels with the animals with the required information. Generic forms are being developed for provinces that do not have movement manifests. CCIA has developed a mobile app, MOBO, to make it easier for producers to report information to the database. The app can be used offline, critical for producers who live in remote rural areas with poor Internet connectivity. There is funding available
to producers and
organizations for traceability adoption, value chain development and equipment through the BC Traceability Funding Program.
