Coopetition is a word that was created in the 1980s by combining Competition and Cooperation. It is an understanding that businesses that are in competition can often benefit by a spirit of collaboration. Basically, they gain much more than they are giving up by the sharing of ideas and experience.


I believe there is no better word to describe the ener- gy that exists within the Greater Sacramento Chapter of NARI. It always amazes me how freely insights and suggestions are shared among competitors within this group. This exchange not only benefits their individual businesses, but also the consumers they serve. When a homeowner deals with a local NARI contractor or


supplier they are not only getting the expertise of that contractor, they are also getting the full benefit of the collective experience of all the seasoned industry veterans within our chapter.


Contractors and suppliers get involved with NARI because they want to en- sure they are aware of the very latest products and techniques available in the marketplace. They are also able to take advantage of a wide variety of classes, presentations, and certifications to ensure the best results possible for the clients they serve. All of these things are certainly important. However, I truly believe the most valuable benefit of NARI membership is through the sharing of ideas and experiences with other professionals who have the same commitment to quality, ethics and professionalism.


It is great to have a resource like NARI considering all of the options and com- plexities in today’s construction industry. Having a network of colleagues in the marketplace can help a contractor ensure that the consumer gets exactly what they are looking for.


This spirit of coopetition benefits our members, consumers, and the construc- tion industry in our community.
