LIVE 24-SEVEN
you’re a loser in his mind, whereas I think you get a lot out of doing these things and taking part! He will tease me about my track record, for example Strictly Come Dancing… I know he was a minx over that… …Yes and Sport Relief…but [laughing] I think you’ve just got to do these things and enjoy the journey. It’s not just about the destination. He’s awful to you, I must admit I do love him and he speaks his mind, which I really like, but he’s a minx to you! I know, he is naughty, but I do get my own back from time to time!
Do you get nervous when you’re presenting some of the bigger events that are of national importance, from Olympics and royal weddings? Do you have that sense of ‘oh my god I’m here and this is happening’ or are you focused on the task at hand? The role you have to play? I think you do have to focus on the task at hand and the role you’ve got to play. For me, I think it’s more about channelling the anticipation and excitement and there is nothing like being involved in a breaking news story – a really significant piece of history. It’s such a privilege as a journalist, whether it’s the referendum result or a royal wedding or diamond jubilee – whatever it is that’s happening it gives you goosebumps because you think ‘well I was right there when it happened, I was a part of bringing it to people’s attention and telling the story’, and so you focus on that side of it, which is the thing that sees you through.
You have a huge passion for travel; if you could be transported to any destination, where would it be? You’ve covered some lovely destinations, haven’t you! I know, I’ve just got back from the Maldives and it’s my idea of absolute heaven – it really is! It just depends, as the thing with travel these days is it is so much more accessible. As a child we used to go down to Cornwall, a lovely part of the world, nothing against Cornwall, but I never travelled to foreign destinations – it’s only recently that I travelled. I’ve been on safari to Zimbabwe and because I went to Australia for the André Rieu concert, I was able to travel around Australia. You know I never dreamed I’d get there, as it’s one of those trips that you think you’re going to have to take loads of time off work to make the most of it and it’s going
to cost a fortune to do it. It’s an amazing thing to see the world like that. But I think my favourite place in the world is the Maldives and I think because of the job that I do, you just need to chill out and switch off sometimes and it’s one of those places that allows you to do that, it’s that vision of paradise, you know, white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and dolphins somersaulting in the background – it’s incredible.
You are incredibly grounded and lovey to talk to… Ahhh …are you conscious of keeping a reality check on life? For me I just do a job, I’m lucky enough to do a job that I love and I don’t take that for granted. I think an important thing with any job that you’re doing is to remember deep down who you are and where you’ve come from and never lose sight of that. I think sometimes it’s easy to get swayed by things and the environment you’re in or the people you’re with, and I think you’ve got to keep a sense of who you are. I’m lucky enough with my family and my friends that if I did get ideas above my station, they’d soon tell me about it anyway, [laughing] that’s what I love about them, so it’s a question of being true to who you are.
Lastly, which piece of music are you most looking forward to André playing and have you got your outfit sorted? Those ladies in his orchestra always look amazing! Oh, I haven’t got it sorted yet! The thing is, the ladies in his orchestra always dress up magnificently, so I know I’ve got to up my game. It’s one of those ones where only a beautiful big gown will do, so yes, I will be putting on my thinking cap on for that! This year the theme is ‘Shall We Dance?’ and it’s celebrating the waltz; one of my favourite waltzes is Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers. I don’t know if he will be playing that, but I suspect he might and yes I will be waltzing! They have made me waltz before and I’ve got a bit better now I’ve done ‘Strictly’ – I’ve got a bit of a chance of getting around the dancefloor [laughing]! It will be lovely with dancing in the aisle and in the cinema as well!
Thank you for talking to me Charlotte! Thank you Katie, I’ve loved it!
