Nichols Family Butchers & Deli NICHOLS Butchers have
been a fixture in Leiston for many years and are renowned for their superb local produce and excellent customer service. Now, five years since moving to their new shop, the superb reputation of the family business continues to grow.
This is a traditional butchers shop specialising in selling a great selection of locally sourced free-range meat. Ernie has been in the trade since he left school and was joined by Chris getting on for 25 years ago, it is fair to say they have plenty of knowledge and experience. More recently Hayley (Ernie’s daughter) and her two sons have also joined the business so it is fair to say this is very much a family affair.
The choice of meat is staggering. As summer takes hold with long evenings and warm weather, a huge range of BBQ meats are available. Nichols Butchers are famous for their home-made sausages with plenty of new and interesting flavours being
introduced. Alongside these BBQ enthusiasts will find homemade kebabs, burgers and lots of marinated meats – there really is too much to list, you’ll have to pop in and see for yourself! Helping Chris and Ernie are a team of qualified and passionate butchers who are always on hand to offer hints, tips and advice. Where possible, Chris will only use local producers and the quality of the meat will never be compromised. Everything comes from within a 20 mile radius of Leiston and all meat is fully traceable, not only to the farm or herd, but to the individual animal. Chris has built great relationships with his suppliers and regularly visits them. A

big advantage of a traditional
butchers’ is that they buy in whole or half carcasses and then butcher it in-house. This means that unlike most supermarkets where you might find beef available in five or six different cuts, Nichols are able to offer 55
cuts of beef. Chris explains that customers’ tastes and preferences are changing and people know what they want, so it is not uncommon for people to ask for feather steak or cheek. However, this quality doesn't automatically equate to a higher price. It is a common misconception that buying your fruit and veg from the green grocer and your meat from the local butcher is more expensive than if you were to buy it from a supermarket. Well, like for like, that simply isn't the case. Naturally you may well find some products are cheaper in one place than the other but overall you will not be spending any more if you shop at your local butcher. There is also the case to be made that superior quality would offset any difference in price. In fact, Chris always has special offers and promotions, so please keep an eye out for the weekly specials.

such as Suffolk salamis and cheeses as well as olives, charcuterie and dips. There is a range of specialist products from around the world to supplement the regional foods. For instance, Nichols are particularly well known for their superb olive oil, feta and Greek cheeses that they buy direct from producers
