MiFi Review
So what is aMiFi? This wasmy first question! AMiFi is a portable, pocket-size router – just like a home or office router, but smaller. It provides the security of its own private Wi-Fi hotspot and can be shared by up to 10 people (provided they are given its unique passcode). A big plus is that with Cellhire’s offering the data SIM card in the MiFi typically uses the strongest network signal that it finds.
On a recent visit to Italy I was able to review aWiFi from Cellhire. The device is small, very portable, and came by signed-for mail with the sim card already installed for the country chosen. In my case this was Italy, where I was cruising on a EuropeanWaterways hotel barge from Venice to Mantova, so a mix of big city, small towns and rural locations. Connecting both my iphone and laptop to the MiFi was easy. Just a click on the menu revealed a secure password and up to ten users could connect. The MiFi worked well and gave me secure internet connection. Most of the time the MiFi connected via 4g and in really rural locations on the River Po it still gave me internet connection via 3g.

I always have concerns when abroad about logging on to free or hotel internet so a big advantage of using your own MiFi device is security.MiFi devices use airborne network coverage, as opposed to the publicWiFi signals that are sharedwith everyone (or those given a passcode). Public WiFi signals present a security risk, because hackers and identity thieves use them to extract private information from other users on the network. With a MiFi, your network is your own, and nobody accesses it without your permission.
The MiFi came battery-powered and with an optional mains lead and charger. Any WiFi-enabled product – smartphone, tablet or laptop (even printers) – can connect to it, enabling users to email, browse the web, access social media and use apps. The device is frequently chosen by travellers wanting instant data connectivity abroad because it works throughout tourist destinations and beyond, allowing for reliable access to Google Maps. Users have no excuse to get lost!
