Tony celebrates 50 years working for Hammond Motor Group

in East Anglia. Tony was there on every occasion. Managing

Hammond remembers

Director, Glen when

he was Tony’s apprentice. “I remember one of my first ever spray jobs”, he said smiling, “I was painting a coach and Tony had to keep coming behind me and clear up the paint runs I was causing.”

IN 1969 man landed on the moon for the first time, The Beatles played their last public performance

Nixon was the President of America. A little

and Richard closer to

home, Concorde flew its first maiden test flight out of France and Harold Wilson was the Prime Minister of Great Britain. A little-known fact at

the

time, was that Tony Whiteman started his apprenticeship, as a panel beater working for A W & D Hammond at the age of 17. Incredibly,

after 50

years he has outlasted them all and is still there. To celebrate this fantastic achievement, Hammond Motor Group awarded Tony with a plaque and a watch. Tony was one of only eleven employees when he first started working for A W & D Hammond, which was based in Wenhaston at the time. The company had only formed

seven years previously in 1962. One of his first jobs was to strip out a door on a Humber Snipe, “I’ve never seen so many screws in one door!” he recalled.

The types of vehicles he worked on back then were Singers and

Triumphs, a

far cry from the vehicles of today; now he works on all types of vehicles from HGV’s, coaches, cars and agricultural machinery. “Back when I first started, we had five-year apprenticeships and we were trained to do every aspect of the job, from dismantling, to panel beating and the respraying”, he said. The company soon out- grew itself and moved to Halesworth in Norwich Road, which is now currently the Ford site, before splitting again to Blyth Road in the town and becoming one of the largest accident repair centres

Hammond Motor Group now employs nearly 300 people. As well as the accident repair centre, it has five franchises, including Ford, Nissan, Isuzu, Subaru, and Iveco. There is also a rental department, an HGV

at Landguard can be best managed into the future will commence in June.

Landguard has developed into an extremely

servicing centre and a recovery department. Further afield, it has a semi-trailer repair business in Dereham under the name of Roadcare, another recovery site in Rendlesham and a Nissan franchise in Bury St Edmunds which also includes an accident centre.

destination for local people and visitors alike over the past 30 years. During that time there have been many changes and the organisations involved now need to review what they have achieved so far and seek the best way forward to meet the challenges of the future. Supported

through National Lottery the Heritage

Fund, the project will provide training opportunities to ensure

trustees and key volunteers are aware of the most up to date best practice so they can confidently develop a shared vision and strategic plan. To inform outcomes workshops, consultations and learning opportunities through visits to similar will

professional led business and visitor assessments.

Landguard is a special

place, a peninsula to the south of Felixstowe lying between the North Sea and the Orwell Estuary. King Henry VIII commanded the first fortifications to be built at Landguard to defend Harwich. Defences have come and gone, changed and developed to

counter ever evolving

threats from abroad. Today the present Grade 1 listed 18thC Fort is bordered on one side by a vegetated shingle spit designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and on the other by the busiest container Port

in the UK. Housed in the Ravelin block is the

Felixstowe Museum, whilst the Landguard Bird Observatory is situated atop one of the Fort’s prominent outer gun batteries. This juxtaposition of giant ships and cranes, wildlife and history merge here into one unique but ever changing landscape at the southern most tip of Suffolk. Commenting on the award, Landguard Project Officer Paul Grant said: “We want to build on the amazing work that’s been done by our dedicated volunteer groups and there are exciting plans and ideas for Landguard’s future. First however we need to make sure we have the right structure and resources in place to make the most of new opportunities. So it’s great that the National Lottery

Heritage Fund is

supporting us with a grant from its Resilient Heritage Fund towards shaping our future.” Notes to editors

This project is a partnership between the organisations that manage the heritage and wildlife assets at Landguard. These are; East Suffolk

Council, English Heritage, Landguard Conservation Trust, Felixstowe Museum and the Landguard Fort Trust.
