M

y focus across both print and online will be on SME growth and development across all

sectors. Funding opportunities, meeting regulatory and reporting expectations and entrepreneur growth and re-skilling are ideas that will underpin the approach to features, Q&A, industry surveys and business solution guides. An exciting area for SME magazine’s

focus is the growth of FinTech that is bringing new investors, liquidity and funding to boost a variety of exciting opportunities for start-ups. Many new fintech start-ups are providing platforms and applications in the form of RegTech, InsureTech, AgriTech and MedTech. It is interesting to track and address new tech trends that are not only providing services to the traditional banking and finance and payments sectors, but with Digital Ledger Technology (DLT/ Blockchain), there is greater scope to revolutionise all industries. And it’s happening in tandem with mobile and cloud based services, opening up a way for dynamic entrepreneurs to find innovative solutions to meet new consumer needs and user experience. A strong digitally driven economy

is a staunch idea in domacratising the playing field for many business entrants to find success; however the knock on effect of the pace of this new commercialism can also lead businesses to suffer at great cost from cyber security breaches. Every issue, SME explores issues arising from Cybercrime and Cybersecurity. This issue, on pages 22 Be CyberAware and 23 Cybercrime: Who is most at risk?, read the ills of delayed attention to cyber defences and how fraudsters target particular cadres of staff.

Making work & life balance Over April 2019, meeting government

regulatory deadlines in Making Tax Digital has been at the forefront of the minds of many SME owners and accountants. In the cover story on page 14, serial entrepreneur Sarah Willingham also a BBC Dragon, partners with Xero in guiding SMEs in navigating the challenges of transitioning their company’s culture, to filing online. SME magazine is also about

advocating good industry and company practices. There has been a lot of discussion lately on what the long-term effects can be on employee and business productivity of the stresses and strains of a work a day life. Much will be debated on this topic during Mental Health Awareness Week taking place from 13-19 May 2019. Drawing attention to many of these issues, on page 20 is my interview with Bruce Daisley, Twitter’s VP EMEA and rising celebrity of the famous podcast series, Eat Sleep Work Repeat. Read Bruce’s reflections on how some iconic company leaders are setting a bad precedence and the psychology of how longer working, dampens an innovative spirit and stifles creativity. During May, SME will also be present

at The Finance Leaders Summit and in June at Watford Expo. I would love to hear from you on

the challenges and milestones of your business and also on how your business is partnering with others to tackle problems and bring new solutions to the market. Do contact me at zoya.malik@publicationsuk.co.uk
