Relief roadsurveyhas nowbeencompleted
STUDIES into the viability of a Leeds-Langley relief road have progressed to the next stage, we have learnt. Surveys conducted in recent
months by Kent County Council have beenconcludedandare being examined jointly with a specialist highways firm to determine the way ahead. Relief road champion and
county councillor Gary Cooke hopes to invite parish councils to a meeting in early July to update its members onwhat the studies have
concluded.Thereafter, potential re- lief road routes could be deter- mined. But Cllr Cooke claims that, with
Maidstone Borough Council’s massive house-building pro- gramme beginning to bite, any so- lution must be seen as the “beginning and not the end”. Cllr Cooke said: “It is clear that
this can no longer be seen in isola- tion as a south east Maidstone
issue. The reality of this is going far further. The congestion that is im- pacting people’s lives is not just happening on theA274 or inLang- ley or in Leeds. It is everywhere. “Ifwe canget this one going then
we need to look at all the other placeswhich are being affected by the explosioninhousing inthe bor- ough.” The council has 17,600 new
homes in its Local Plan, passed in late 2017, and will have to include
another estimated 8,000 more when it is reviewed in the coming years. Liberal Democrat councillor
Clive English warned that a relief roadmight come at a huge price – evenmore homes. Cllr English said: “It depends on
the fundingmechanisms out there. The relief road is a good idea but wedon’twant to builda relief road and build thousandsmore houses to pay for it.”
