Ipswich ready to keep Felixstowe on the move

The fi rst signs of spring may

fi nally be here, but ABP’s Port of Ipswich recently handled 5,000 tonnes of imported road salt for Suff olk Highways to help make local roads safer. Taking no chances, Suff olk

Highways’ assistant director, Mark Stevens said: “Despite the weather gradually getting warmer,

it is important to be

prepared for every eventuality. Our salt barns remain well- stocked for any sudden

deterioration in conditions.” Ipswich’s much larger

neighbour Felixstowe may also owe its little brother thanks. Ipswich is close to Highways England’s Whitehouse which covers the A14, the main link to the UK’s biggest container hub.

Extended leave

Three Russian sailors sparked a mass scramble by local lifeboat crews and a coastguard helicopter in the early hours of 21 March aſt er their infl atable boat was reported missing on the way back from an onshore drinking trip.

According to the BBC, they

had leſt the Alana Evita coaster, anchored two miles off

the

Somerset coast, to sample the nightlife in Barry, South Wales, on Wednesday. Rescuers eventually found

April fool – or is it?

Well done to sharp-eyed readers who spotted the 1 April date on our website story that Stena Line’s Holyhead was to erect

a 100ſt Hollywood-style sign to greet visitors arriving in the Welsh ferry port. An April Fool maybe, but,

them stranded on Flat Holm island, four miles off the Welsh coast. Somehow, the trio managed

to extend their trip to the small Welsh resort for several hours, not beginning their trip home until 03:45. What on earth did they discover in Barry to keep them for so long?

is it such a bad idea? Stranger ideas have gained currency. A few years ago, who would have thought

that people would

fl ock to the industrial town of Gateshead to see a rusty angel sculpture?
