GLOW ALL OUT

Tips For A Black Tie Ball Or Very Glam Party

The arrival of Spring heralds a whole host of black tie events. Whether it’s a wedding, bah mitzvah or you’ve been invited to “monter les marches” at the Cannes film festival, you’ll want your hair and make-up to be looking the part; on trend, lasting all night long, and paparazzi worthy... at least a memorable Instagram photo.

Once you’ve chosen your outfit - definitely the most difficult part - it’s time to decide on hair and make-up looks to compliment your look. For big events like these you can play around a little and jazz up more formal outfits with pops of colour, or enhance without detracting from busy prints or accessories.

Hair accessories are having a real moment, whether it’s headbands, barrettes, or even metallic thread woven into a updo. Source some rhinestone-embellished or diamante hair clips to catch light and add some playful luminosity to your hairstyle.

The glow doesn't finish there! Here are five on-trend make-up looks to make sure you stand out from the crowd, adding some sparkle and shine to your face.

Super luminous skin

There are various ways to achieve the gorgeous, glowing radiant skin seen on the red carpet. Mix any illuminator with your moisturiser or foundation to create a natural radiant glow without tipping into sparkle territory.

My favourite is Tom

Ford illuminating primer - it can be used after moisturiser and before foundation to give a flawless, smooth canvas while also brightening the skin. A small amount goes a long way and the results are subtle rather than bling-y. If you want to amp up the wattage, NARS highlighter in Copacabana can be used on top of foundation on brow bones, cheekbones, bridge of the nose, inner corners of the eyes or for a shimmery accent lining your cupid’s bow.

Icey Eyes

To compliment diamonds, either real or fake, use a silvery eyeshadow across the lid. Start by lining your eyes in black pencil for drama, set it with a slight smudge of black eyeshadow to define the shape. Then sweep silver shadow across lids, paying attention to the centre of the lid to make your eyes appear

bigger and brighter.

Compliment with a neutral lip shade, as seen by Lady Gaga's stunning look at the Golden Globes. If you don't want to go full-on frost, add a silvery- metallic accent at your inner corners for a light-catching effect. For a high shine foil finish try K-beauty brand Touch in Sol’s Metallist Liquid Foil & Glitter Shadow Duo, which pack a shimmer creme shadow on

one end and a matching foil pigment on the other for a dazzling finish.

High gloss lips

After years of matte finishes it's nice to see more glossy finishes re-appearing. Newer formulations have made gloss cool again - comfortable without being sticky, and with a high finish. For a plumper looking pout, apply your chosen lipstick shade and blot the pigment with a tissue before dabbing gloss in the middle of your lower and upper lips with your fingertip. I've been so impressed with the Fenty Beauty glosses, which really condition lips rather than drying them out thanks to the inclusion of shea butter. The shimmery pink-nude Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in Fenty Glow compliments all skin tones.

The final gilding touch? Once your make- up is finished, take a clean brush and lightly buff over the skin to diminish any hard lines, sweeping onto the neck, ears and decollete. Add a touch of highlighter onto the collarbones if so desired.

If your jewellery is gold, be it statement earrings

or a vintage necklace, use a warmer shadow in either muted pastels, gold or bronze over eyelids to complement it. Create accents with deep greens and rust shades to compliment the colour of your eyes and make the gold really pop.

Mirror Shine Jillian Dempsey's vegan line of Lid Tints are perfect for an understated yet polished eye look. My favourite shade is the transparent gloss Dew, as it's perfect over any eyeshadow colour to create a lived-in sheen. These non-sticky, wet look balms can be simply dabbed on over eyeshadow with a brush or fingertip, quickly and so easily.
