Château de Joux - located on a rocky headland since the Middle Ages, is the perfect example of the evolution of military architecture.
A fortified castle created by the sires of Joux in the 12th century, it became a military fortress, updated by Vauban in the 17th century and then by General Séré de Rivières in the 19th century.
It has also been a state prison: Mirabeau and Toussaint Louverture, two prominent figures of the struggle for the abolition of slavery, were locked up here.
Today the Chateau is a place of culture and a symbol of the struggle for the conquest of freedom.
Open every day from: March 30th to November 15th, 2019 - guided tours only
