LIVE 24-SEVEN

How do you prepare for the stage? Well before a concert I will have rehearsed the music I am about to perform so that I feel completely prepared. On the day, I try not to speak too much – my family and colleagues get used to understanding my whispered conversation! Sometimes my ‘glam’ squad of hair and make-up are with me and I actually find that very relaxing as they work their magic. Then usually about half an hour before I go on, I warm-up with some scales, bits of arias and five minutes before I go on, I say a little prayer. I don’t exactly have superstitions, but I always have my Italian coffee pot with me. There’s nothing quite like a strong espresso to sharpen your senses.

From Woman of the Year awards to Ambassador for BBC music day alongside Kylie Minogue and Nile Rodgers, you seem to be bridging the gap between mainstream music and the classical genre single-handed; are you conscious of reaching a wider audience, a younger audience? I think so. I get messages from younger listeners, which is always lovely. I did some work in schools towards the end of last year, and it was so lovely working with the children. They are so open about how they feel about music. For many of them it was the first time they had heard someone singing in the ‘classical’ style live. Seeing the reaction on their faces was such a treat.

You've had so many incredible moments or achievements in 18

your career from awards to your song ‘Ave Maria’ being adopted by The Vatican for Pope Francis’ Jubilee Year of Mercy, but if you could pick out one defining moment, what would it be? I think I would have to go a long way to beat standing on the stage at the ‘Roman Forum’, in front of a large orchestra and looking out at the audience in the most incredible historical setting. I will never forget that.

You most recently performed with Michael Bolton. How do you prepare as an artist for a duet? Do you have to be acutely aware of both voices, adapt yours to suit? I've always won- dered about this. It is a different way to sing. I work on it on my own and then when we put it together there is always some give and take – someone wants a breath there, you have to adjust certain phrases. However, it is so exciting when it comes together and Michael was absolutely wonderful to sing with.

Finally, you have many admirers – many male admirers – what’s the strangest thing a fan has given to you, said or done? My fans, male or female, have always been absolutely lovely. I remember one of them coming to Birmingham when I was on tour because he had drawn a special picture of me. I was very touched that he had taken the time to do this.
