TO ME, HOW I AM DRESSED IS PART OF THE PERFORMANCE. I AM
LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE BEEN INVITED TO THE RUNWAY SHOWS OF THE DESIGNERS YOU HAVE MENTIONED AND BE DRESSED BY THEM.
of your achievements in art and culture. Previous recipients of this award include Sophia Loren, Dame Helen Mirren and Luciano Pavarotti no less, how did you feel accepting such a prestigious award? It was an absolutely amazing and humbling feeling. Not only was I given an award that has so many associations with true icons, the presentation was in this amazing castle in Gallipoli which was filled with the most amazing sense of history. It was so special that it was in my home region of Puglia.
You've also been dubbed ‘The Heart of Puglia’ and that would mean so much to your grandfather; do you consider Italy your home? My grandfather and all my Italian family are incredibly proud – as are my English relations. I am very lucky because I have two homes – England and Italy.
I'm a huge fan of Andrea Bocelli and have travelled the world to see him in various locations; he's an admirer of your voice, as is José Carreras, do they inspire you as an artist or who does inspire you? It would be hard not to be inspired by two such amazing singers. José Carreras in particular holds a special place in my heart, as he was also a great favourite of my late English grandmother. They say you should never meet your heroes, but all I can say is that he was a dream to work with, so kind and generous with his time.
Carly, you're releasing a contemporary recording of the timeless Neapolitan love song, ‘I’ Te Vurria Vasà’ (I Want To Kiss You), what drew you to this song in particular? The first time I remember hearing this song was when my Italian grandfather sang it to me. He and all of his brothers were great musicians and singers – one of his brothers was called ‘Mario - the Singing Chef.’ I was only young when I first heard it, but I loved the song. I never forgot it and it was always in my mind that if I got the chance, I wanted to record it.
How did it change the song for you, performing the lyrics from a woman's perspective, did you have any concerns over that? Do you know I didn’t really? Love happens to us all, man or woman, and the story applies to all. You love someone so much that it sends you a little crazy, but in the end, you can’t give it up.
Despite being born in England to Italian ancestry, you’re somewhat of an icon in Italy and you were honoured with Puglia’s prestigious ‘Premio Barocco’ award in recognition
Let's talk fashion. You've been dressed by and caught the attention of many designers from Dolce and Gabbana, Ermanno Scervino and Giorgio Armani, how important is fashion to you both on and off stage? As my mother – and anyone who knows me – will tell you, I love clothes. I always have from a small child – although then my taste ran to very sparkly pink things!! To me, how I am dressed is part of the performance. I am lucky enough to have been invited to the runway shows of the designers you have mentioned and be dressed by them. Let me tell you it is every bit as exciting as I thought it would be.
I always think that female classical artists look so stunning – like the 'dream' they sing. Is how you look an important part of what you do? Do the gowns and stunning dresses help you with your performance? As I said, how I am dressed is part of the performance. It would be so disrespectful to the song, the music, the composer and even the audience if I looked like I didn’t care. However, the dresses are, if you like, just the ‘cherry’ on top. What is really important is that I understand the song that I am singing and that I feel I have conveyed that message to my audience. The song leads the way.
