and speaker, Kromme will discuss how technology, such as artificial intelligence, robotics and the so-called Internet of Things, will drive innovation and enable farmers to increase the sustainability of production. Before he takes to the podium, Paul Abrams will discuss the potential for stink bugs to become a problem in local greenhouses. Maria Keating will present

strategies to develop an effective IPM program and André de Raadt of Priva will describe a computerized management information system designed to help greenhouse managers.

Floriculture Thursday afternoon in the

Evergro Room, the focus shifts to floriculture. Alberta greenhouse crops specialist Mohyuddin Mirza will describe how growers can recognize and correct nutritional deficiencies in bedding plants and ornamentals before they become major problems. Roberto Lopez of Michigan State University will explain the basics of annual and perennial flower induction. The process helps ensure plants flower on the exact dates they are needed. Finally, Debbie Foisy will

report on the inaugural New Blooms flower show she hosted last year. Growers will learn which flowers received the highest rating from attendees, giving them valuable insights into which new varieties they should consider in the coming year.

Hazelnuts Existing and potential

hazelnut growers are encouraged to attend the BC Hazelnut Growers Association seminar in the BASF Gallery on Friday afternoon. Growers will learn about new EFB- resistant varieties, nutrient management, how to get an orchard off to the best possible start and opportunities for organic hazelnut production. BCMA hazelnut specialist Karina Sakalauskas will also describe the BC Ministry of Agriculture replant program introduced last year and what growers need to do to apply for funding.

Agroforestry Agroforestry has been

promoted as a way to increase biodiversity, improve pollination and enhance environmental sustainability. But what crops should you grow and how do you put ideals into practice? Five experts, including Lee Hesketh of the Farmland Riparian Interface Stewardship Program and Drew Bondar of the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, will provide their insights Thursday afternoon in the BMO Room.

Water management

How does the new Water Sustainability Act impact growers and what must they do to comply? You’ll get all the answers during a special session on agricultural water management in the Evergro Room Friday morning.

Spotlight on dairy, innovation

Every dairy farmer knows good cow production and

good cow health begins with good nutrition. Silage is usually the biggest component in a dairy nutrition program, and the one a farmer knows and can control most. So how do you manage silage to get the most out of it and what kind of safe practices should you use when ensiling or removing the silage? The Silage Man, Keith Bolsen, Kansas State University

professor emeritus of cattle nutrition and forage management, will deliver practical tips on all these topics during a pair of informative talks at the BC Dairy Expo Seminar in the BMO Room at Tradex on Thursday, January 24 at 10am.

The 2.5-hour seminar will also include presentations by

BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy senior environmental management officer Margaret Crowley and Valid Manufacturing corporate development lead Chad Shipmaker. Crowley will summarize the new Agricultural Waste

Control Regulation, expected to come into force this spring. Changes to the regulations will impact all agricultural operations in the months and years ahead. Dairy farmers, especially those farming above aquifers, will be particularly interested in how the new regulation will affect manure management. The new rule is widely expected to limit the amount of nutrients farmers can apply to their land. One way to reduce manure’s nitrogen and/or phosphorus content is with a centrifuge. To that end, Shipmaker will describe a made-for-BC centrifuge his company is prototyping. Tickets to the BC Dairy Expo are available at the door

on Thursday morning. Cost is $25 and includes the Scotiabank dairy producer luncheon following the seminar, seminar proceedings and a three-day trade show pass.

Ag Innovation Day Ag Innovation Day is returning to the BMO Room at the

Pacific Agriculture Show, Friday, January 25, for an afternoon packed with information and displays on innovative new ideas and products in agricultural technology. Hosted by Mike Manion of Innovate BC, the session will

feature a keynote address by Remi Schmaltz of Decisive Farming in Alberta. Decisive Farming is focused on developing and enabling the digital farm and Schmaltz’s talk will discuss how farmers and entrepreneurs can profit from state-of-the-art precision agriculture and blockchain technology. The afternoon will open with a panel of agricultural

entrepreneurs describing their developmental “journey.” Marnie Lett of Acterra Tech Ltd. of Squamish is working

on revolutionary ways of composting manure. Hamlet Abnousi of Novobind Livestock Therapeutics Inc. of Vancouver is creating solutions for poultry, shrimp and canine pathogens, while Jack Zhang of Lumenari Technologies Inc. of Richmond has been creating smart lighting for greenhouses and other indoor production facilities. The afternoon will also provide information on haskap, shrimp and insect protein production and plenty of time for attendees to view the agricultural technology showcase and network with presenters. There is no extra charge to attend.
