For the loyal fan, football grounds are a beacon of hope; a place to gather to experience joyful moments and great sporting occasions. However, with stadiums attracting upwards of 50,000 fans, they are also attractive targets for terrorists. Whilst the ultimate attack may target crowds inside the venue, spectators gathered around the ground offer an equally attractive and vulnerable target. Unfortunately, this is not a theoretical situation, with attacks on the Stade de France and Bangalore’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, and planned attacks on venues such as the Camp Nou in Barcelona, bearing witness to the appetite to target football grounds. Whilst the response to these threats


needs to be proportionate, the fact is that terrorism is a frightening reality here and now. But as stadium owners rethink
