HAVING taken on the business in 2014, this year sees Simon and Mary Sparrow mark five years at Hippersons Boatyard. The yard was established in the mid 1950’s and has been located at the Gillingham Dam site 1980’s.

Over time the business has evolved to reflect
the
changing needs of the people who use or visit the river. The traditional business of boat building and repairs is still very much evident with two workshops on site. Likewise, there are around 40 privately owned vessels moored here at Gillingham Dam. However, for those who do not own a boat, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this beautiful and serene environment, and Hippersons Boatyard is the place to visit.
As we move into spring
and summer, residents and tourists alike are starting to think about things to do and days out with family and friends. As a starting point why not consider hiring a boat? Booked in advance, these are available for three hours (9.30am-12pm or 1pm-4pm) at £60, a full day
(9.30am-4.45pm) for
£100 or lunch hire (11am- 2.30pm) for £80 throughout the season (April – October). On-the-day hire is subject to availability with one hour being £25 or two hours £45. They are simple to operate and give you great freedom to explore the river. Most of the boats are electric which makes for a quiet and smooth journey. Those who prefer a more
active way of exploring are sure to enjoy the new range of canoes, kayaks and bikes, available from May, please call for price and availibility. Mary and Simon received
an EU leader grant to help towards the purchase of these and they are excited to be able to offer this new service this season. Dayboats and
canoes
appeal as much to local residents as they do tourists to the area. However, those who are looking for somewhere to stay on the broads will be attracted to the houseboats. Since they have been at the yard, Simon and Mary have completely renovated,
re-fitted
even re-configured these houseboats. The aim is

maintain the traditional fuss- free approach to life on the broads, whilst mixing some contemporary touches (wi- fi, new appliances, DVDs etc). This is an on-going process and every year the houseboats are updated to appeal to the modern holiday maker. There is an exciting addition to the

Hippersons have added a luxury, award-winning, floating glamping pod. They have worked with a specialist company to develop the pod and it will be the first of its kind in the country! The idea is that this offers a different, modern take on staying on the broads. Again, they received EU funding for the project which has enabled them to offer this fabulous new accommodation to be available from May this year. This is a pilot project and there are plans to add a land- based glamping pod later in the year, watch this space! The Broads really is a special place and Simon and Mary want to share
this as many people as they can. To that end they are offering Twilight Tours as a new experience for 2019. These will be available on Thursday evenings (5pm to sunset) throughout May, June, July and August, must be booked in advance and are priced at £100. If your idea of exploring is sitting back and relaxing whilst taking in the views, this is definitely the way experience the broads.
