Weather Report - February 2019 This summary is compiled

from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles.

Max Temperature- 19.0C (66F) on 26th compared with 9.9C (49F) in February 2018. Min Temperature- -1.5C (29F) on 2nd compared with -4.7C (24F) in February 2018. Avg. Max. Temp- 11.30C (52F) - 2019. 5.16C (41F) - 2018. 7.50C (45F) - Average. Avg. Min. Temp- 2.72C (36F) - 2019. -0.09C (32F) - 2018. 1.90C (35F) - Average. Mean Temp - 7.01C (44F) - 2019. 2.53C (36F) - 2018. 4.70C (40F) - Average.

Air Frosts- 5 compared with 15 in February 2018. Rainfall Total- 1.16" compared in February 2018.

with 2.50"

(30-Year Average (1981-2010) 1.84"). (2019 Total-63% of Average). Most Rainfall On One Day- 0.28" on 10th. Wind Direction- mainly from:- South-West 8 days, South-East 7 days, South 4 days, North-West 4 days and West 3 days.

February 2019 was incredibly mild to warm by day in particular and somewhat drier than long term average. The unexpected warmth during the last nine days transformed the month from slightly above to record breaking daytime February levels. The Average Maximum Temperature of 11.3C exceeded previous February “highs” in 1990 and 1998 (11.1C) and 1993 (11.0C). However, five nights with air frosts and seven others of less than +2.0C, relegated this February’s Mean

below that of 1990, 1998 and 2002. These chilly nights often followed days of sunshine from clear blue sky. The 19.0C Maximum recorded was the second mildest February day on my entire record (only marginally better was 19.2C on 23/02/2012), while 18.1C on 27th was third mildest and 17.0C on 25th was equal fifth mildest. What a contrast to the conditions experienced exactly a year before in 2018, which was during the coldest February since 1996. The extreme nature of the last four days, made to feel worse by winds up to gale force, helped to lower mean temperature to more than 2C below long-term average, lower than the last recent cold February, 2013. The big difference of course was the source from where our winds originated from.

During the latter stages of February this year, a plume of warm air was drawn up from the Tropics on Southerly type winds by the position of a blocking High Pressure. Meanwhile Eastern Europe was experiencing Northerly type winds on other side of the High Pressure endured much colder conditions in places such as Southern Greece, Cyprus and the Middle East. The total rainfall for the month was 1.16”, accumulated with a measurement on each of the first ten days. The 9th and 10th combined contributed marginally under a half an inch of that total. Yet by the end of February we were experiencing drought conditions, having eighteen consecutive days without

recordable rainfall. This however was only driest February since 2016. Thankfully, we were devoid of snow, which has only otherwise been avoided in the month of February on two other occasions (2014 and 2011) since the Year 2000. Hail showers however were noted on both 1st and 2nd. Winter 2018/2019 (December, January and February) Average

Maximum

Temperature- 9.0C (1.5C above 1981-2010 average). Average

Minimum

Temperature- 2.7C (0.5C above 1981-2010 average). Mean Temperature- 5.85C (1.0C above 1981-2010 average). Rainfall Total- 4.90” (77% of average).

Mildest winter since 2015/2016. Notable positive temperature anomalies in both December (+1.7C above long- term Mean) and February (+2.3C) was only partially offset by a chillier January than average (-1.0C). Driest Winter only since 2016/2017

and combined before that

2011/2012. December (2.39”) recorded only slightly less than

January and

February totals (1.35” and 1.16” respectively). A dry winter often has a detrimental effect on water supply later in the year. I would suggest although the general public may not like a wet spring, it may well be needed, following the growing problems and the subsequent effect on food prices experienced in 2018 and this year.

Youngsters prepare for battle in this Shakespearean twist of a story

TICKETS are now on sale for Rising Stars’ forthcoming production of ‘RJ - A Rock Musical’. The cast of 9 to 19 year olds are currently putting their finishing flourishes to this tragic tale which will be staged nightly in Beccles Public Hall & Theatre from Thursday 21st to Saturday 23rd March at 7.30pm. ‘RJ - The Rock Musical’ is

based on Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare's classic tragedy of doomed teenage love between two rival families. Staying faithful to the original work by Shakespeare, this rock musical version by Joy Ardy and Andrew Milburn combines the Bard's original prose interwoven with new lines and musical numbers with a modern twist, while still allowing you to follow the tale of Romeo and his dearest Juliet throughout the fine city of Verona. Fully costumed and accompanied by a live band, this is one Rising Stars’ show not to be missed. ‘RJ - A Rock Musical’ is next

the fully staged show

in an ever growing line of successful musical productions by the Beccles-based musical theatre group, whose previous credits have included ‘Les Misérables’, ‘Seussical’ and ‘Treasure Island’. Although the majority of the cast are under

between treatments. Approximately £22,000 was

given to people with cancer who were struggling to cover the cost of travelling to and from their appointments with costs that could not be reclaimed through their hospital. The grants also covered the

costs of other essentials to help manage the impact of their cancer, such as beds, chairs, kitchen appliances and washing machines. Four in five people living with cancer experience

a

financial impact. The average is £570 a month. Macmillan offers grants to people with cancer who are struggling financially, have a limited income or savings. To find out about the financial help Macmillan offers, call
