Joanna Lamb a real Edinburgh Hero By John Barrett, former local Member of Parliament and Local Councillor

Recently, along with many others in Corstorphine, I attended the funeral of a young woman who died just days after her 18th birthday. I wrote this article for the last Murrayfield Grapevine - Her dad confirmed to me that he is happy for it to be published again - Having stood, and won, many elections in the past, I am glad to say that my first experience of coming second was something I could not have been happier with. I was humbled recently at an event in Murrayfield, organised by Care UK, where awards titled “Edinburgh Hero” were given for service to the community. While I was delighted to be given a second prize and a lovely trophy for over 30 years of community service in Edinburgh West, the real hero of the day and winner of the first place was a young woman called Joanna Lamb. Joanna has dedicated her energy to raising funds for other young people, like herself, who are having to live with cancer. As a teenager, at Craigmount High School, she was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer which resulted in the amputation of one leg, yet she signed up to lead last year’s Kiltwalk, as well as leading many other fundraising events. Joanna has already raised tens of thousands of pounds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Itsgood2give, who support young cancer patients and their families in Scotland. If you would like to support their work, you can see the great work they do at, www.itsgood2give.co.uk Something feels even more unjust when it is the very young who have cancer diagnosed. With their entire life ahead of them, being told they have cancer is something older people fear, while the young rarely consider it as a possibility. Joanna’s Facebook page is an inspiring example of her fundraising work and if you would like to help increase her already impressive total raised, just go online and there are many stories of the work she has done to help others. A real Edinburgh Hero.
