of her children and an elderlyman was “kicked in the ribs”. Ackleton, of Sittingbourne, and


Collins,ofChegworth, left the scene as police arrived. Isobel Corrigan, defending, said


the pair remembered little of the fighting itself. They claimed there wasprovocationfromtheother side


when one of their party was grabbed and held over a balcony. The defence lawyer said: “There


was agreatdealofprovocationand excessive self-defence, they would contend.” The court heard Collins recently


starteda tarmackingjobwhileAck- leton hopes to get a roofing job. They come fromstable families. ProbationofficerLaurenPackham


said: “Mr Collins was remorseful and took full responsibility for his part in the affray.” He said he was “ashamed”ofhis conduct infrontof young people as he had two chil- dren of his own. Ackleton, who pleaded guilty to


assault and affray, received a 12- month community order, told to perform120 hours of unpaid work and pay £285. Collins received the same sen-


tencebutmustdo150hoursunpaid work and a rehabilitation activity programme for assault, affray and criminal damage.


News Uninsured cars seized


KENT Police officers have successfully seized eight cars since the begin- ning of the year in a drive to improve the safety of residents and visitors to the town and surrounding villages. These included a Ford Transit seized in Station Road, Headcorn on

by those who flout the law and we are committed to repeatedly tar- geting these drivers tomake the roads safer. “Our message is simple, if you drive uninsured be prepared to have your vehicle seized and face a significant fine.”
