THIS VALENTINE’S DAY DINING IN

I'll let you into a little secret. Adam and I don't really celebrate Valentine's Day with any of the typical pomp and ceremony of dining out. We tried, but it just isn't us – the menus are often bland and geared to the masses, places are packed and the atmosphere strained as everyone is trying so hard to have a romantic time. That said, there are some great local places; if we didn't have a four month old baby, you'd probably find us at Eckington Manor enjoying the culinary talents of Mark Stinchcombe, or at delicious Japanese restaurant Koj in Cheltenham.

However, this year we'll be feasting together on some of the finest food and drink the Cotswolds has to offer – here are our suggestions if you want to celebrate in your own home too.


What we'll be drinking We'll be opening a bottle of Poulton Hill's award winning Bulari sparkling wine, grown locally near Cirencester. If bubbles aren't your thing, pop over to Tivoli Wines in Cheltenham who will undoubtedly be able to find something to match your meal.


To start Since having Harry, I've tried to make sure most of our meals are quick but tasty. This year, we'll be keeping it simple, starting with a delicious baked Rollright to share. Made by David Jowett in Oxfordshire, Rollright is a cow's cheese inspired by the famous soft cheeses of the Alps. I'll score the rind, bake and serve drizzled with Cotswold Gold garlic oil and a hunk of Stroud’s Salt Bakehouse sourdough - no cutlery needed!


Costèllo+ Hellerstein


The main event The centerpiece will be a medium-rare entrecôte of beef with mushrooms, confit garlic, wilted spinach and chips triple-cooked in Cotswold Gold rapeseed oil. You can pick up all you need for this minimum effort, maximum taste dish from your local farm shop - we favour Court Farm Shop in Cheltenham.


For dessert We've had no time to bake recently so we'll have a Cheat’s Chocolate Pudding. They're decadent and just a little bit naughty too, but nobody makes brownies like Hetty's Kitchen. Grab a couple of Salted Caramel brownies from their serving hatch near Gloucester Docks, or stop at the gorgeous Gloucester Services. Warm in the oven and serve with locally made Winstones ice cream for a deliciously indulgent dessert fit for your Valentine.


To finish Round out the evening with a cup of freshly roasted coffee from the Scandinavian Coffee Pod in Cheltenham. You'll need some cheeky petit four too - we recommend scrummy local Costèllo+ Hellerstein chocolates - I'd opt for the dark chocolate orange or delicate sea salt caramel!
