A BUYER’S GUIDE ROMANCING THE STONE…

For centuries jewellery has been used to convey secret messages, often of passion and love, given as a token of affection to remind lovers of their bond.

In today’s modern world it seems hard to believe that affairs of the heart were not to be spoken about in public, so courting couples found ingenious ways to convey their love and hide their message from the rest of the world.

Victorians were the masters of secretive and forbidden affection, so when it came to their legacy in hidden romance, they chose a particularly cryptic way of communicating.

Acrostic jewellery can spell out any message your heart desires, in the most colourful of fashions. The magic behind this hidden message jewellery relies on the viewer’s ability to identify each gemstone, or the message will remain a secret cryptic message between the loved ones.

Acrostic jewellery is believed to have originated in Paris in the early 1800s and was first created by Mellerio, a famous Parisian jewellery company, before being adopted in England. In the Georgian and Victorian period, secret messages and symbols were very popular as a way of expressing your feelings.

The most popular acrostic rings were ‘Dearest’, ‘Adore’, ‘Beloved’ or ‘Regard’ rings, commonly using a range of stones to spell out the hidden message. The gemstones often used would be:

Regard: Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby and Diamond Love: Lapis-lazuli, Opal, Vermeil (the old name for garnet) and Emerald Adore: Amethyst, Diamond, Opal, Ruby and Emerald

Dearest: Diamond, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire and Topaz.
