CES 2019 Report Part 2: AI as an ecosystem?
AI and IFTTT (if this then that) was on offer from a range of vendors and technology provid- ers. Alongside the new tech an- nouncements, companies were also pressing home with ways to address privacy and data se- curity concerns. AI is still at a very early stage in terms of true intelligence, as the offerings do little more than offer basic
technology will save lives, en- able greater accessibility and improve productivity. Eureka Park, the venue for start-ups at CES, featured more than 1,200 companies from over 50 countries offering disruptive innovations, attracting inves- tors and big-name brands. Dig- ital health technologies were a major theme, and attendees
provided with the flexibility to change adaptions made by the AI at any time.
Closer to home, Samsung Electronics
announced today
that it will showcase eight in- novative new projects related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), developed from its C-Lab (Cre- ative Lab) program, from Janu- ary 8 through 11 at CES 2019
an instant video making service ‘MEDEO’, an auto-adjusting monitor ‘Girin Monitor Stand’, an AI desk light ‘alight’, and a hearing assistant solution ‘SnailSound’.
Evolve and connect

company’s AI brand LG ThinQ has seen its portfolio grow to in- clude air conditioners, washing machines, TVs, smartphones and robot vacuum cleaners. Park presented LG’s latest in- novations in these appliances which leveraged the power of the AI chip that included a washing machine with reinforced learn- ing and “self-healing” machines that can detect and fix malfunc- tions automatically without in- terrupting operation.
“Our ambition is to go way beyond LG’s current role as a leading manufacturer of con- sumer electronics and become a lifestyle innovator that serves a truly intelligent way of living.” Park also highlighted the impor- tance of evolving intelligence in consumer electronics. For AI de- vices to go beyond simple voice recognition and automated task execution, they must be able to understand the purpose and in- tention behind each command, he said.

assistance with a set of well-de- fined tasks. Nonetheless, the big AI developers are in the midst of a land grab to get their software on as many devices as possible. The aim is not only to build an eco-system in which consumers become reliant on their bespoke offering, but also to help gather more data on user behaviour, which can eventually be used to generate revenue through highly-target- ed marketing activities. CES 2019 showed how arti- ficial intelligence will influence every aspect of our lives. IBM Chairman, President and CEO Ginni Rometty's opening CES keynote explored how AI will prove data is the "world's great- est natural resource," enabling revolutions from smart cities to health care, transportation to robotics. During Rometty's keynote, Delta CEO Ed Bas- tian and Walmart EVP of Food Charles Redfield shared exam- ples of AI and blockchain tech- nology in their businesses.
AI applications
CES 2019 saw 11 of the world's leading car manufac- turers highlighting the future of
transportation - including
an air taxi from Bell Helicopter and an electric motorcycle from Harley-Davidson. Self-driving
experienced the latest advanc- es and trends in health care. Bridging both branches of technology, Danish company Oticon showed what it claims is the world’s first personal AI assistant for hearing aids. With Kaizn, Oticon Opn hearing aid users will be able to take charge of how their hearing aid performs during their day to day routine. Utilising every day iOS devices,
especially
the Apple Watch, Oticon Kaizn communicates with users to determine their hearing inten- tions in different sound envi- ronments. By also understanding the typical listening environments where users live, work and socialise, such as cafés or the office, Kaizn can contin- uously train to automatically implement informed, tailored changes to a user’s hearing aids settings, and ultimate- ly improve a user’s hearing experience in every-day life. For example, based on con- firmed previous user intent, a hearing aid can anticipate a user’s regular Monday morn- ing meeting and ensure their settings are ready for ‘focus’ or assume that a user would like their settings to provide them with ‘comfort’ when they take a relaxing afternoon tea break at a local café. LG is also extending its con- sumer insight from home to the road with innovative offerings for a new in-car experience. With the advent of an autono- mous driving revolution, LG has set out to change and expand the definition of vehicles from a means of transport to a mobile space. LG’s AI-enabled cab- in solution will help make the fullest use of time saved from not driving by turning vehicles into a conference room, movie theatre or a personal shopping boutique.
New platforms
Intel made several announce- ments spanning PCs and new devices to diverse growth seg- ments including artificial intelli- gence (AI), 5G and autonomous driving (AD), and the innovation necessary across the data cen- tre, cloud, network and edge to enable the new user experiences
and form factors of the future. Intel showcased its latest Intel Xeon Scalable products, shipping today with advanced AI and memory capabilities, and 9th Gen Intel® Core desktop products. It also an- nounced new 10nm products for PCs, servers and 5G wire- less access base stations, the future of new chip designs based on its 3D packaging technology (Foveros). Intel also spotlighted what’s possible when technologies work seamlessly together across the entire spectrum of computing. Comcast* and Intel are working together to bring the connected home to life. New initiatives with Al- ibaba* demonstrate how In- tel AI plans to deliver athlete tracking technology during the next Olympics. Mobileye and Ordnance Survey will bring us closer to the realisation of smart cities and safer roads.
