Visit Luquillo Beach – Located at
the base of El Yunque, stop in at Luquillo Beach, the most perfect palm-tree and sand beach you’ll ever see. Also, the water is always calm. If you see someone climbing a palm tree (an astonishing sight), buy a coconut from him. He’ll use a machete to lop of the top. Coconut milk is delicious.
Visit the Kioskos of Luquillo Beach -
For a real treat, visit the kioskos (kiosks) outside of Luquillo Beach for some REAL fried Puerto Rican food. Opt for the alcapurrias, bacalaito (fried cod), arroz con pollo, and a cold beer. Heaven.
Listen to the Coquis – The coqui is a
small tree frog beloved on the island. It is named because of the sound it makes – co-kee. A nocturnal amphibian, you’ll hear its music all over the island all night long. Fun fact: for many years, people tried to take the coqui to other islands and they all died. Puerto Rico was its one and only home. Or not. About 15 years ago, someone took some coquis to Maui and released them. Imagine my surprise when I moved to Maui and the first night my son, Derek and I heard our beloved frog calling to us. Turns out the coqui can thrive on Maui too.
Snorkel – The reefs around Puerto
Rico are abundant with corals, fish and shellfish. No trip to the island is complete without seeing these treasures for yourself. Because many reefs reach to
just off-shore, you don’t need a boat to see for yourself. Or, opt for a snorkeling trip to one of Puerto Rico’s outer islands. You won’t regret it.
SCUBA Dive – If you are a diver,
this is a must. With plenty of reefs and wrecks to choose from, you could spend years (I did) diving around PR and never getting bored. For something a little unusual, take a night dive in the Phosphorescent Bay. It is out of this world. Fun Fact: Puerto Rico is on the Puerto Rican Trench, the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean, with depths to 5.2 miles.
Visit the Phosphorescent Bay –
There are a couple of them, actually. Home to microscopic organisms that flash light when disturbed, the waters come alive with every dip of your hand or paddle (kayak tours are available and fun).
Visit Puerto Rico’s Museums – Puerto
Rico offers world class art museums. Two of my favorites are in the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in San Juan (Santurce, an area of San Juan) and the Museo de Arte de Ponce. The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico features Puerto Rican art from the 16th century to the present and visiting there is akin to taking a course in Puerto Rican history. With more than 5,000 works of art, the Museo de Arte de Ponce (located in the southern town of Ponce named after Juan Ponce de Leon)
2019 ®
features the painting Flaming June by Frederic Leighton. You will never feel the same about orange again after viewing this gorgeous painting.
Symphony Orchestra
See a Play, Go to the Puerto Rico – Puerto Rico
is big on the arts. There are numerous playhouses on the island with plays in both Spanish and English. Ask the Google machine for more information on shows and schedules. Or, visit the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. It has 80 musicians from around the world and a 52-week season so there is something to enjoy year-round.
These are but a few of the
experiences I can recommend on La Isla del Encanto. Whether you enjoy any of them or find ones I haven’t mentioned, I promise you will have an amazing time in Puerto Rico. So much so, that you are sure to return as often as you can. Te prometo.
