solid or fluid. In the petrochemical industry we talk about erosion of the lining which is caused by high velocity gas and particles (both in the same system). Testing for erosion resistance is done by a test similar to the action inside an FCC unit where gas at high velocity, carrying fine particles, erodes the lining away and we refer to the test as an abrasion resistant test. Could it therefore be considered as the erosion of the lining by means of an abrasive action? Maybe.
Although the “sand blasting” test method (ASTM C704) is done to replicate the erosion wear on a refractory lining in fluidised catalytic crackers, it is most probably not the best method to determine abrasion wear where rubbing, scratching and scuffing are means of material loss. It seems there are rather a number of bespoke (custom made) tests for determining this, but I could not find a standard method to evaluate for instance the abrasion of stone on the refractory lining of a rotary kiln or shaft kiln. Corrosion and erosion of refractories for the glass industry is known to be made by rotating a refractory specimen in molten glass, and the effect of slag on the brickwork of a furnace is done in a horizontal rotating cylinder where the inside is heated by a gas flame and fresh slag is continuously added.
The IRE committee discussed the results of the survey, which were published in the July 2018 journal, and decided that the first action should be to improve the website. We hope this finds agreement with the members as well. However, this is a task easier said than done, and in making the website more relevant it opens up even more questions. It is of course important that should you have any good ideas or even things to avoid in a website, that this should be communicated to the committee or at least a member of the committee. If you are unsure who serves on the committee, it is on the back of the journal, but I guess suggestions are easier just sent to the secretary.
