Cash help to improve access to rail stations

CAMPAIGNERS fromacross the region could receive money to make their trainstationaccessible to everyone. Passengers who use Maidstone

West, Headcorn, Lenham and Marden stationsmade the case for a share of theGovernment’s £300m Access for All funding with the support ofMaidstoneMPs. They said lifts, subways and

user-friendly footbridges should be a feature of all stations. Southeastern and Railtrack an-

nounced this month that four sta- tions from theMaidstone area are

among the 22 cases being recom- mended to the Department of Transport formoney over the next five years. Campaigners will learn if they

have been successful in getting im- provements in the spring. A spokesman for Southeastern

said they had received 8,000 nomi- nations involving 107 stations. Caseswere judged against crite-

ria including local feedback, loca- tion and the availability of alternative step-free options. Speaking of Marden Parish Council’s success in getting its case

heard,MaidstoneMPHelenGrant said: “This important commuter station serves half-a-million users a year anddemandis growing, but only the London-bound half of the station can be used by people needing step-free access. “The situation is hugely incon-

venient andinequitable for anyone who struggles with stairs; passen- gers with luggage, wheelchair users, mothers with prams, and thosewho just need help.” She also backedMaidstone Bor-

ough Council’s funding bid for MaidstoneWest.
