Freight Break 28 UK container haulage ‘faces meltdown’
The UK container haulage industry is in crisis, warns one of the sector’s leading operators, Felixstowe’s James Kemball. In a report by the carrier based on interviews with major hauliers, forwarders and cargo owners – it warned of surging costs, driver shortages and difficult operating conditions in ports and on the roads. If issues were not addressed, there would be no container
transport industry in the UK, it warned. Wage costs, a long-standing problem for the container sector, had
risen sharply after the Brexit vote and the depreciation in Sterling, prompting the East European drivers that had kept the sector afloat to leave the UK. Moreover, suggestions that self-driving trucks
could be introduced in the next few years had discouraged new entrants to the profession. Road and port congestion – the latter partly as the result of IT
problems in Felixstowe – had added to the problems. The problems have been compounded by the imbalance of import containers over exports in the UK, which had worsened further since China restricted its imports of waste materials, now one of the UK’s biggest exports. Shipping lines have also attempted to take control of export
transport to match import deliveries, which has had the effect of pulling down road freight rates, said the
