42 Hooked on 4-H
First-year member will be back after successful close to season
by RONDA PAYNE VANCOUVER – Langley
youngster Zara Rinke, 10, doesn’t have much interest in sports or dance, so her parents looked for an activity that might grab their daughter’s attention. “We didn’t really know what
to expect,” says Zara’s mom, Tara Rinke, when her daughter joined the Langley Wool and Woolcraft 4-H Club earlier this year. Tara liked the name of the club because of the woolcraft aspect. “We didn’t really know it was going to be buying and selling [an actual lamb]. So it’s not only learning about the lamb, but also about what you can do with the fleece.” At the first club meeting, Kemma Seaman and her daughter Shay explained that their flock would soon have babies. They said if anyone wanted to participate in a project but needed to buy a lamb and rent space, they could help with both. The mother and daughter have mentored Zara through the process, adding to the
education the first-year 4-Her received in the formal club meetings.
“She took us right under
her wing,” Tara says. Zara proved to be a natural with lambs. Hers, named Willow, sold to JD Farms owner Jack Froese at the PNE 4-H auction on August 20. The Ile-de-France/ Suffolk cross weighed in at 100 pounds and sold for $725, just $1.75 a pound shy of Brianna Morrison’s reserve champion market lamb which sold at $9 a pound. “I like animals. I like to work with them,” Zara notes. “I don’t like sports. I like it. [4-H is] something different to do.” Zara’s dad, Patrick, was also on hand at the auction, along with Zara’s younger sister Tyla. He values what the 4-H club is contributing to his daughter’s skills and confidence. “It’s way better than video
games,” he says. Patrick finds that going to
events like the PNE auction has opened Zara up to making new friends who Zara says are different from her school friends. She also

When asked if she understood the nature of her lamb’s future after the sale, Zara nodded and quietly
expressed she was a little sad. “It’s been a hot topic in our family the last couple of weeks leading up to this,” notes Tara. Zara’s sadness for Willow
isn’t holding her back. She’s already planning to do
another lamb for next year’s project and is thinking about adding a hog to the mix as well. Seeing how well Willow did in the sale, Zara has a challenge ahead of her to make her second year in 4-H as successful as the first.
