COUNTRY LIFE IN BC • SEPTEMBER 2018

27 BC youth prevail at Western Canadian Classic by DAVID SCHMIDT

ABBOTSFORD – BC dairy 4-Hers definitely are the best in the west. For the third year in a row, BC was named the premier province at the Western Canadian Classic 4-H dairy show. First held in Saskatchewan in 1985, the annual event rotates among the four western provinces and features the top junior, intermediate and senior dairy 4-Hers from each of the four western provinces. The 2018 event was held in

Abbotsford, August 22-25. While showmanship and conformation competitions highlight the event, the WCC also includes clipping and judging competitions, a dairy science quiz and a variety of fun events. The premier province

designation recognizes the province’s aggregate score from all its members in all its competitive events. That BC won this year was not a huge surprise as the BC team had the highest number of members (32 compared to 28 from Alberta, 20 from Manitoba and 17 from Saskatchewan) and earned the grand and reserve championships in both the showmanship and conformation events. This was the third year in a row a BC 4-Her topped the showmanship competition. Named the 2018 grand champion showman was Lorna Hamming of Delta. Hamming marked her tenth and final year in 4-H and hopes to soon open a dairy processing plant on her family farm. Jodie Stoker of Dewdney was named the reserve champion showman. Now an agriculture student at Lakeland College in Alberta, the 20-year-old has spent

the past six years in 4-H. Another 10-year 4-Her, Martin

Rypma of Abbotsford, showed the grand champion calf, Hamming Solomon Danica. This was the second year in a row that Rypma showed the grand champion calf at WCC, making him the third repeat winner in the conformation competition. Previous repeat winners were Chad and Katelyn Crest of Alberta, who each won three conformation championships. Rypma, who now works as a genetic adviser for Select Sires/GenerVations, has had an extremely successful career at WCC. He earned the senior clipping championship in 2016, was named the overall junior judge in 2012, the overall intermediate judge in 2013 and 2014 and the overall senior judge in 2016. Last year, he completed a rare double by also being named the 2017 grand champion showman. He was the high-point participant at WCC in 2016 and last year was named the second winner of the Logan Chalack Memorial Award. Logan Jacobsen of Cobble Hill

showed the reserve grand champion calf, Wedgwood Lambton Loralie, a calf he had obtained from his uncle’s herd at world-renowned Wedgwood Holsteins. The only major award not to go to BC was for the high-point participant. That honour went to Travis Pruim of Saskatchewan. Since Pruim is still a junior, he was not eligible for the free trip to the European Breeders School in Belgium (a grander version of the WCC) which usually goes to the high-point participant. Instead, that award went to Lee Morey of Alberta, the senior 4-Her earning the most points in the 2018 WCC.
