Comber employs an unusual and complex painting technique to achieve a deep textured surface in her works. She applies layers of colour in varying ratios of oil to pigment, resulting in a richly coloured composition. Comber then carves into the layers to paint, creating lines, peaks and troughs reminiscent of ploughed earth. As a final step, Comber covers the surface with powdered pigment which gives the works a distinctive matte finish.
