Castle’s invitation to 900th birthday party

LEEDS Castle will launch a series of events next year to mark the 900th anniversary of it being built. The year of celebration will in-

clude the opening of a newgarden, named after patron HRH Princess Alexandra, in June. July will see the 900 Carnival of

History, a two-day arts event cele- brating the castle’s place in history. A piece of music has been com-

posed for the anniversary and will beperformedat the classical concert. A podcast will be read by Cold

Feet actorRobertBathurst, while the theme of the popular flower festival will be “AFloral Party”. At a launchat the castle onFriday,

October 19, chief executive SirDavid Steel said the charitable foundation contributes £25m to the local econ- omy and employs hundreds of peo- ple, andmore than 60 volunteers. The 900 Carnival of History on

July 27 and 28 is described by or- ganisers as a “dazzling riot of colour” using large scale costumes in a collaboration with festival art

specialists, ShademakersUK. Students from the University of

the Creative Arts in Rochester and local artists will be drafted in to make the costumes. Castle bosses are bracing them-

selves for what could prove to be a “difficult year” in 2019, because of continued uncertainty over Brexit. There are fears that thedisruption

experienced over theM20 works in preparation for Operation Stackwill hit visitor numbers next year. Recently, SirDavidacknowledged

Leeds Castle CEO Sir David Steel at the launch of the anniversary celebrations

a “significant” drop in visitor num- bers over the summer and has insti- gated an analysis. Hewrote in theLeeds andBroom-

field parishmagazine: “I think there are a number of reasons: poor weather atEaster, followedby a glo- rious summer when so many fami- lies decided to go to the beach.” He also blamed the introduction

of photographic ID – to prevent local people swapping tickets via socialmedia – as another reason for the decline.
