as possible, flow in and out of the room. Everything does matter.”

The presentation also will describe

the physical, emotional and finan- cial costs of surgical site infections (SSI) related to the case study and the critical need for a patient advocate when patients are unable to advocate for themselves. William R. Phillips, owner of Rite-

way Building Services Inc. will pres- ent “Applying NFPA 99, Healthcare Facilities Code, to Your ASC” in the ASC Management track.

“The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) stan- dards now primarily reference the 2012 Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) and the HealthCare Facilities Code (NFPA 99),” he says. “The major sig- nificance of the NFPA 99 2012 is that

this standard has become the leading compliance reference for health care facilities, now taking precedence over conflicts with other standards, which, in the past, often generated confusion over already difficult to interpret compliance standards for health care facilities.” Certain more interesting facets of compliance under this standard allow the facility (ASC), in some instances, to set its own inspection intervals and compliance criteria based upon risk assessments related to the current working environment, he says. “Some of the possible implementations repre- sent money-saving opportunities and certainly time-saving opportunities.” There are certain lessons learned on how to comply with the newest regula-

tions as interpreted and applied to the ASC market, he says.

In his presentation, Phillips also will point out differences with this version of the standard over previous versions and provide attendees with common sense applications for compliance with the standards within their facilities. He will share user-friendly tips, guides and reference information that will be “ready to use” aids in furthering com- pliance with the standards.

The presentation will include

newer compliance items adopted more recently and a discussion on the CMS- Emergency Preparedness Program compliance information as it relates to life safety compliance and readiness. Learn more and register today at ascassociation.org/2019winterseminar.
