BIFA expands training team with further key appointment

With an increasing Member demand – especially for Customs- related courses – and a forecast for more apprenticeship training, BIFA has expanded its training team with the appointment of Claire Capaccioli. Carl Hobbis, training

development manager, said: “One year ago, when Graeme Wilkinson joined our training team, we forecast that with Brexit and the development of a relevant freight forwarding apprenticeship, the need for training would increase. “With the International Freight

Forwarding Specialist apprenticeship now available for delivery, and with ongoing uncertainties over the ramifications of Brexit on such matters as Customs Clearance, what was anticipated is now evident. Claire’s appointment reflects that.” Claire, who has worked in the

industry for 27 years, has a vast amount of freight forwarding experience. She started her career in 1991 at Kintetsu World Express but more recently, spent 20 years at Yusen Logistics. She is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. Hobbis added: “I am delighted to

welcome Claire to BIFA. She will deliver all aspects of our freight and Customs training and her extensive industry knowledge will add nicely to the team.” “With virtually all apprentice

training providers committing to put

learners through a BIFA introductory course and our five-day Customs BTEC, it is paramount that we have the recourse and experience.” Robert Keen, BIFA Director

General, commented: “Having known Claire for some years

through her involvement with BIFA in our Manchester Regional meetings and her assistance with previous BIFA training material developments, I am looking forward to her joining the team.”

Beware of scam concerning companies in liquidation

BIFA Associate Member EFTA (www.eftaweb.com) has advised about approaches its Members have received, out-of-the-blue, relating to companies that have gone into liquidation. This is an old scam and

forwarders that may have been caught out by failed companies are advised to be on guard. The scammers/fraudsters get

your details off statements of affairs/lists of creditors filed at Companies House and then contact you suggesting that due to a supposed breach of certain sections of the Insolvency Act 1986, a creditor (you) can pursue the directors personally. This is nonsense. The only

person who can take action (an extremely rare course) against the directors is the liquidator and any ‘result’ will be for the general benefit of the creditors. To get you interested the

scammers/fraudsters suggest that they have ‘game changing’ information and the only cost you will incur (should read ‘lose’) is a registration fee – in the latest example I have seen this was £750 plus VAT. The ‘hook’ is that they say that

if they do not recover your money within 120 days, the £750 plus VAT will be refunded.

Online tool improves vehicle crime reporting

One of the most significant problems facing the road haulage sector is vehicle crime, which often goes unreported and in some cases is given low priority by law enforcement bodies. BIFA has supported and

publicised the activities of the 6

National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (NAVCIS), publishing its weekly updates on our website. The information includes details

of crimes committed in both the UK and EU. Regular reading of the

information helps identify crime

hotspots, which in the UK mainly centre on certain motorways. In order to encourage reporting of

these incidents, NAVCIS has introduced an online tool which can be accessed at https://navcis.police.uk/navcis- incident-notification-form/

BIFA is grateful to James Campbell of EFTA (the European Freight Trades Association) for this information. Many BIFA Members rely on credit control tips, fraud alerts and scam information from EFTA.
