HE R E FORD V I S ION GREAT VISION STARTS WITH YOU

Nuffield Health Hereford Hospital's Ellie Bulmer interviews Mr Ben While & Mr Simon Madge, HerefordVision Consultant Eye Surgeons.

EB: Can we start by talking about cataracts. What are they?

SM: Cataracts are cloudy lenses actually inside your eyes. If you live long enough, everyone will develop some lens changes, but some develop them earlier than others. Fortunately, they’re easily treated.

BW: And you don’t need to wait until they’re ‘ripe’. These days, you can have cataract surgery at any stage – in fact, many people have surgery before a cataract forms, simply to reduce their dependence on spectacles: that’s a lens replacement procedure, which prevents you developing a cataract later.

EB: Clever. What treatments are available?

BW: Simple day case surgery is the mainstay of therapy. Patients are often and understandably anxious about their eyes, but they can rest assured that cataract surgery in Hereford is typically entirely painless, is usually carried out with eye- drops alone, and has excellent results.

EB: Day case surgery?

SM: Yes – in fact, most people are in and out of hospital in under two hours. It’s a very positive experience and people are nearly always seeing better within 24 hours.

EB: Are there any advantages of going privately?

BW:Yes. A key advantage is the ability to choose the type of lens used, for example, a multifocal lens, allowing both distance and near vision without glasses. Other advantages include minimal waits and seeing an experienced consultant at every stage. You don’t need to wait for your cataract to be so advanced that it meets local NHS criteria.

EB: Everyone I know is talking about lens replacement surgery: you can do it here in Hereford. What is it?

SM: In lens replacement, the lens of the eye is carefully removed and replaced with a new lens, correcting your spectacle prescription from inside. In the right patient, a special multifocal lens then allows spectacle-free distance and reading vision.

EB: Who’s the ideal candidate?

BW: People in their 50s to 80s, who need spectacles for distance and near, but others can benefit too.

EB: Where should patients look for more information on these amazing treatments that are available locally?

SM: Please visit the www.HerefordVision.com website for more information, informational videos on the techniques discussed and brochures on the different treatments.
