Ireland’s new Logistics Associate Apprenticeship programme is ready to start on 26 September, in line with its target date, says the Irish International Freight Association. The Level 6 Higher Certificate
in Logistics is the first non- craſt apprenticeship
to be
offered by Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and the first of the industry-led programmes to be delivered by DIT School of Management. The scheme was announced
by Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton on 8 December. It has been developed in partnership with the
Irish International
Freight Association and related industry associations and
representative bodies and followed a call by the Irish Government for National Apprenticeship applications in May 2017. The content of the
apprenticeship was approved for development by the Minister on 8 December 2017. Thanks to the efforts of all the
businesses and industry bodies concerned, the programme has been validated within six months, an unprecedented achievement, said chairman of the apprenticeship consortium and general manager of Freight Transport Association Ireland, Aidan Flynn. The “earn as you learn”

Olympic golden girl Dame Kelly Holmes is to host next year’s BIFA Freight Service Awards. Entries to the awards, which are
in their 30th year, are now open and BIFA director general Robert Keen says that any company looking to go for gold in these awards can have no finer example to follow that someone who scaled the Olympic podium twice in Athens in 2004. The deadline for entry is 8
October. Keen says: “Olympic gold

proposal for a two-year Logistics Associate apprenticeship comprising full-time work- based activity with academic class-room involvement. Proposed off-the-job training include modules on the different modes of freight transport, workplace competency and international trade. It is one of 26 new National
Apprenticeship programmes announced for development by the Irish Government. The Irish Government
is committed to more than doubling the number of new apprentices registered to 9,000 by 2020 and expanding further into new areas with €122m allocated in the latest budget for apprenticeship training.
Expanding Newport buys former steel site
ABP South Wales has purchased a 10 acre site next to the east gate at its Port of Newport to expand its port-centric manufacturing operations as well as increasing storage capacity for existing customers. The sale of the Neptune Works,
most recently used by AIC Steel, is believed to be the largest industrial
property transaction in South Wales so far this year. ABP South Wales head of
property, Rhys Morgan, said the site’s size, height of access, cranes and yard space made it attractive for plant and engineering works for major infrastructure projects under way in South Wales and the South West, such as Hinkley Point .

Gefco UK’s forwarding arm has opened new facilities at a custom logistics campus between Glasgow and Edinburgh airports.
Diana Dostalova-Sujewicz has been promoted from operations team leader to head of operations at European freight specialists, Felixstowe-based Jordon. Her new position will include responsibility for developing processes to further improve service levels and standards, increasing sales volumes and identifying training requirements.
DHL Freight is offering customers throughout Europe a fixed delivery day (FDD) service for its standard product Freight EuroConnect. Customers can schedule deliveries up to five business days beyond the regular lead time.
DSV in the UK has been awarded Authorised Economic Operator F (AEOF) accreditation, covering its road, air, sea and solutions operations. The forwarder had to prove it met specific criteria, including an appropriate record of compliance, a satisfactory system of managing commercial and transport records with appropriate customs controls, financial solvency and security and safety standards.
DSV is helping British shoe-maker Clarks open its first distribution facility in mainland Europe. The forwarder will operate a 10,000sq m centre from its existing operation in Krefeld, Germany and will become fully operational in Spring-Summer 2020, serving traditional retail, wholesale and online channels.
EGT Express has launched a new groupage consolidation service in both directions between the Baltic port city of Vilnius and the Leningrad region of Russia. The weekly service shortens transit times by up to three days and the shuttle also serves Sebezh, Velikiye Luki, Veliky Novgorod, Pskov and Vyborg with a maximum five-day transit time. It will serve both inbound and outbound freight forwarding. Vehicles and warehouses can also handle reefer, hazardous and heavy cargo.

DHL Freight has extended its contract to manage the BMW group’s overland transport in 17 countries, taking on supply chain management in seven additional areas. A new DHL Freight custom-made logistics solution has been implemented as part of the contract conclusion. The contract now covers the management of about 90,000 shipments per month with temperature-controlled shipping and dedicated transport available in all areas.
Fox unveils export boosting plan
International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox has launched a new Export Strategy aimed at increasing UK exports as a proportion of GDP to 35% including smarter and more tailored support to UK companies. It will encourage and inspire
more businesses to export, as well as providing information, advice and practical assistance on exporting. The
great.gov.uk scheme will
be developed into a single digital platform for both domestic business growth and export support and will work with large companies to help build the capability of UK supply chains. New measures include support
for businesses looking to invest overseas and developing an online tool that will allow businesses to report any non-tariff barriers that they face.
Kuehne + Nagel has been awarded a three year logistics and supply chain contract with Malaysian government-owned oil and gas organization, Petronas. Under the agreement, KN will assume end-to-end integrated supply chain responsibilities including freight forwarding services, logistics management plus off-site and on-site warehouse operations.
Gefco has completed its acquisition of Europe-Morocco transport specialist, GLT - announced on 11 January - following European Regulatory approval. Founded in 1998, GLT is a leading operator between Algeciras and Tangiers, organizing over 16,000 crossings per year, with 75 trucks and 380 trailers. GLT will be owned and managed by GEFCO Spain. The acquisition will strengthen Gefco’s position and expertise in the region particularly in the automotive, fashion and retail sectors.
Gefco Group has been awarded a Good Distribution Practice (GDP) compliance certificate for transport of pharma products by Bureau Veritas. The external auditor analysed the forwarder’s quality system and its ability to answer customer requirements in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Greece, Romania and the Group’s headquarters in France.
