Clinic warned over diet drugs
A PRIVATE clinic used by dieters in Maidstone has been pulled up by a Government inspection team for the weight loss products and claims it uses. Kings PrivateClinic, which says it
has helped over 70,000 patients bat- tle the bulge, has been ordered to take action after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) ruledits service was not effective, safe orwell-led. The independent King’s Street
clinic, run by Ingrid Camilleri, was inspected by two pharmacist spe- cialists from the CQC Medicines Optimisation Team, who found that patients received unlicensed medi- cines, and information about their drugswas incorrect or incomplete. They reported: “We founda leaflet
that told patients they were ‘com- pletely safe’whilst taking themedi- cines. The medicines prescribed at Kings Private ClinicMaidstone can have potentially serious side effects that patients and prescribers must be vigilant for. Other written infor- mation failed to list a potentially se-
rious side effect, andanotherdidnot give adequate directions about how themedicine should be taken.” The inspectors noted that some
drugswere potentially not themost effective and were not recom- mended by health institutions. Itwas also foundaDisclosure and
Barring Services check could not be provided for one doctor. There were no records on site to
demonstrate if ordering, receipt and disposal of controlleddrugswasun- dertaken appropriately andconcern about the fact that patients’ treat- mentwas not sharedwith their GP, but given to the patient to pass on. The report said: “Staff were clear
that their aim was to help patients improve theirhealththroughweight loss and a healthier lifestyle. How- ever ...we did not see any evidence of long-term adherence to the pro- gramme orweight loss.” Aspokesman for the clinic saidall
the issues raised by the CQC had been dealt with and a final report was awaited.
